Make sure your library is participating in the smile.amazon.com website and make sure to advertise the fact to folks in your town.
Someone already mentioned a gift-wrap table for Christmas...what about something like $35 for a (volunteer) personal shopper for a gift list of "x" number of items. That would only work in a town where you actually trust people - because either the buyer would have to cough up funds ahead of time or the shopper would have to trust the buyer to reimburse them. Many folks know what they want and just don't have the time to do all the running around. Is there a storage facility nearby? See if you can get them to volunteer the use of an empty unit until Christmas, and advertise a place to stow presents until Christmas. (Okay, that might be far-fetched - but I remember it was one of the hardest things for my mom to find a place we (five) kids wouldn't find the gifts, once we gave up on the idea of Santa). Might have to arrange insurance...so this might not work out. |

"Sponsor a (paper) Book."
Check with local arts/crafts organizations for a calligrapher. Find someone who has a good track record and can provide references. Negotiate a good rate -- preferably "per piece." For a reasonable donation, the calligrapher will write "This book sponsored by:" followed by the sponsor's name. (Obviously, using acid-free, archival ink.) Make sure the donation more than covers the cost of the work. Solicit local businesses as well as patrons. I've never tried anything like this, but it was the first thing that came to my mind. Good luck. Last edited by cromag; 11-14-2013 at 02:31 AM. Reason: My lousy spelling. |

Lots of good ideas in here. Did anyone mention a used book sale? Our library does this. You have a period of time where people can drop off their unwanted used books at the library. Then you have a sale, all proceeds benefit the library. You can get rid of no longer needed library books this way, too. You need to publicize it to get the books, though!
I also think a kids read-a-thon is a great idea. Have prizes for the biggest readers/biggest earners. This would be good in summer to double up as a summer reading program. eP |

Our library has a "Recycled Reads" section by the front door. It's kind of an ongoing book sale. Your donated books are turned in at the information desk, and you pay for your media as you check out...50 cents for a paperback, $1 for a hardback, etc. I believe it's maintained by the friends of the library group.

A Christmas Cookie sale could be great. There are people who dread baking and might be interested in buying homemade Christmas cookies. They can be frozen. Maybe get some nice tins (or Christmasy tupperware) and parchment paper. Let people choose the cookies they want, put them in the tin with parchment paper in between, and let them freeze them.
I have a couple of cookie recipies that can be frozen as cookie balls and easily baked. Perhaps tupperware with layers of prerolled cookie dough. Ask for volunteers to make specific recipies, send out the recipies, and sell those with the pre made, donated christmas cookies. You will need to ask people to turn in cookies with recipies so that others know what is in them for allergy purposes. I also like the idea of a read a thon. Ask people to sponsor their reading for a month. Perhaps $.01 a page. It encourages reading and would not cost folks a ton but could raise a decent amount if enough people did it. |

Our library has an ongoing book sponsorship. New books are announced prior to coming into the library. If you want to be first/second/third to read the brand new book, donate a specific amount of money, and you are then the first on the list to read the book. If you donate the purchase price, your name goes into the as donated by (your name here) book plate. The new books once they come in, if they don't have a sponsor, go up on a special shelf for sponsorship. I was really surprised at how well this worked. After the 'sponsorship' time expired, the book was then put in regular circulation, and the next person on the regular waiting list would get the book.

The suggested idea that most appeals to me is the holiday gift wrapping table, especially if your library is in a location near a shopping area. Or perhaps you could get permission to set up a table in a mall. It's a convenience to shoppers, plus they get to feel good about being charitable.

My wife and some other musicians just did a benefit concert for the local Hospice Society and raised over $800 after paying for the costs to run it. There was a silent auction involved.
Other ideas: 1. Make sure that all your library staff has easy access to donation receipts and know how to take donations. Our local library fails this test every time my wife tries to make a donation. 2. Get people/groups/businesses to sponsor book types - A local hardware store could contribute funds to increase the do-it-yourself books in the library. A local crafts store could donate to get more arts and crafts books. This is a win-win as people buy more supplies after reading books like these. For a larger donation, put up signs acknowledging the gift. Expand this to every type of book. 3. Have a local chef come in and cook and give a cooking lesson and do a wine and food tasting event. |
