Yet, the "hot threads" in this forum involve a small, but extremely vocal minority which suggests that it's almost impossible to find even a decent-looking paperwhite, and that it's totally normal that (almost) everybody returns their devices at least once or twice, and possibly up to ten times or more, before getting a device that they can barely stand. I wish this poll was really only about amazon, but it is not. Just fyi, I am happy with amazon, happy with my PW1, which was my first and only one btw.
There is a whole other story behind this poll, and it has nothing to do with amazon. It all takes place in another sub-forum, and I find it really rich when Canuck poses here as amazon's shining knight in armor. Last edited by aceflor; 10-06-2013 at 12:29 PM. |

And the poll clearly targets PW2 owners only and is completely answerable without knowing any background. EDIT: I just tried to find out about the alleged "other story". You can all do this by clicking on the OP's nickname, then "Find more posts...". Sorry, but as hard as I tried, I really can't find anything that would justify any sort of name calling or conspiracy theory. So let's just all calm down, okay? The poll is misleading in the wording of the question.

Wow, informative and constructive criticism at its best!
![]() ...so, what's your suggestion so it won't be misleading? Last edited by ixtab; 10-06-2013 at 01:08 PM. |

Actually, if 1:4 exchange rate sticks, that would be a 20% exchange rate. HUGE. That would be terrible for Amazon.
I doubt reality is as bad as 20%. I'm sure average user is not so discerning as enthusiasts on a forum like this. Future suggestion for the poll: third option to those who kept the device without being perfectly satisfied. That would have been my answer with PW1, as the hassle and fear of getting even a worse one have kept some people at less than perfect but good enough units. I have seen the same here with PW2, people keeping units with small defects they can live with. |

This poll also isn't really accurate as early on some people voted for the first option even though they exchanged theirs due to defects. This was due to some confusion with the way the poll was worded. |

As of this moment in time the polls shows 40 were keepers and 9 were returners: that is FOUR to one for the keepers. That ratio has been steady for the entire poll.
It appears that those 40 are like me: love the contrast between text and background. The 9 returners, however, generate the most posts here. The silent majority were the 40 keepers. Even, among the returners, many may have received a great unit and kept the second one. I really doubt if very many returned it for a refund. I notice that even JSWinden, after posting many criticisms of the PW 2013, finally did get a good one and is KEEPING it Last edited by sirmaru; 10-10-2013 at 11:56 AM. |

Luckily I don't think that is representative of average customers. Enthusiasts that post in places like this are more particular. |

See the big picture.
Quote:
there are 289 reviews of which only 17 are one star and probable returners. That works out to a probable return rate of 6%. I tried at random a Samsung LED TV shown here: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN22F5...owViewpoints=1 It has a 5% return rate if you assume all one star reviewers returned their unit. I then tried a Canon Powershot camera shown here: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSho...owViewpoints=1 It has a 10% return rate if one assumes all one star reviewers returned their unit. Go through products at the Amazon site (they have THOUSANDS) and most have a far higher one star review to total review ratio than the PW 2013. The other problem is the ease of return. Amazon has a 30 day no questions asked return policy for Kindles and a one year guaranty of a replacement in case of a defect turning up later. Very few of those other products have this policy. Finally, a good part of the complainers here about the PW 2012 and the PW 2013 ended up keeping a unit after several exchanges. Sometimes there is newness shock on receiving a brand new original product since folks are not acquainted with acceptable variations. After receiving a few exchanges they realize those variations are NOT defects. Early adopters of all new products go through this phase. Last edited by sirmaru; 10-10-2013 at 12:46 PM. |

As I said, I don't think 20% is the wider reality. I'm sure PW does well with the average consumer.
20% does seem to be the reality here though (not statistical of course) and if so, still something that does seem like a lot. Some here have exchanged many times too, increasing the exchanges beyond what this poll shows. KBoards has similar stories too. It is very clear not all feel issues at all. Nobody is saying they do. But still there are many with issues. 20% exchanges would be a lot. |
