Kindle Paperwhite 2 can't enter USB Drive mode until reboot - Page 2

is this a reason for a return in amazon ?

Frank, I do not see this as a reason to return unless you want to wait for a driver update of some kind or a new version. I returned mine only to read this is somewhat common out here. I am almost afraid to test my replacement (from Best Buy) as CRAZY as that sounds! Not sure what I am waiting for so try not to ask

It should mount on the first attempt after waiting a long while between connections to you Mac. I cannot say it will re-mount upon subsequent and fast attempts. If it does not mount at all that is another story. I hope I helped.

I just tried on a PC it is recognized immediately but not on mac

Wish I could help...I'm a PC person and know nothing about Macs. At least it appears there is nothing wrong with your Kindle.

Sounds like a problem with the Mac rather than the Kindle. Perhaps you should return the Mac?

Please try connecting the your Kindle to your MAC when the Kindle is in sleep mode. This works for me.

When I called Kindle support about the issue they just said they would tell the Kindle devs about the problem and call me back when they figured it out. It's been almost a week with no calls. I did send them another e-mail that said they were still working on it, but if they couldn't figure out a solution they would send me a replacement.
I do have a few other small niggles with the PW2 so I would like a replacement, but I'll contact them again next week to see what's up.

Same here. I had connected several time without issue to my Windows 7 laptop to copy screen captures. I decided to connect to my Mac Mini desktop this morning but no go. As soon as I plug it in the screen light goes out and the page refreshes a few times. I even noticed the WiFi icon flash separately from the screen refreshes. I tried two different cables on all the Mac's USB ports, still no connections. I never had any issues connecting my Kindle Touch to my Mac.

That doesn't work for me. It merely turned on the PW2 with the light off. No connection.

Disclaimer: I don't own a PW2, so I can only speculate.

All Kindles so far have presented themselves as a simple HDD to the "outside", so they should not be treated any differently than a USB stick by the computer's OS (whatever that may be: Windows, MacOS, Linux, BSD, ...). But they do recognize if they are connected as a USB drive (attached and mounted), or just plugged in (attached and not mounted).

AFAIK, there have never been complaints about previous Kindles with MacOS. So my guess is that the PW2 does something differently from previous versions. Maybe they don't reset their internal state correctly, so that they think they're "attached, but not mounted/mountable" on next connect.

I tend to think that it's the Kindle's fault, but it may also be Apple's.

Did anybody test how the PW2 behaves with Linux?

It appears as if some people are having problems with the new Kobo on MacOS, too--not the same problems, but still associated with USB Mode.
