Yes, thanks pdurrant. I always strip the DRM so tend not to think of such things.

How to Re-boot!

I think the reset button does actually work even though it's not doing anything as I tried plugging in a charger and hitting the reset kills the red light for a second or two unfortunately no other effect.

Guess it's just dead in honesty but I couldn't tell you what went wrong it just froze on a page and stayed like that.
See From Sony:

In some cases owners of the Sony reader WiFi experience a software problem. The most common is a "freeze" of the display. In this or other situations there are several ways to do a reboot/(soft)reset/factory reset.

Reboot

Press the power button for three seconds. Normally it shows you a screen that asks you to confirm to completely switch off. Touch Yes. When it's off, press the power button again. This will boot the operation system and Ereader software.

(Soft) reset

At the front side at the left there is a tiny hole. Take the stylus, a paperclip or other thin thing and press the reset button.

Hard reset

Beware, Sony warns: There is a risk of data loss. After doing a hard reset, you will need to restore your content. Your purchased books can be restored from your account at the Reader store. You should only do a hard reset if necessary and as the last step for troubleshooting. After you do a hard reset, your Reader device will need to be authorized again from your Reader store account.

Power off (press powerbutton 3 seconds and choose yes) and back on. While the Ereader starts it shows "opening book", at that moment press -and hold- the buttons next page and back (button 2 and 4). Allow the Home screen to fully load (Loading... should no longer flash in the top left corner of your screen) and then, while you still pressed the next page and back button... release the back button, press the back button, release the back button (while still pressing the next page button), and at last, release the next page button. Then the screen shows: Would you like to execute Factory Initialize? Then choose "yes".

Now turn your device off (by holding the powerbutton pressed for three seconds), and answer yes, and when its off, turn it back on.

I had to do a Hard Reset to recover from frequent freezes. Seemed to cure that problem. This would have been next on the list and Yes, I did have to re-register the Reader and reload all the books after that.

Joe,

This sort of thing happens fairly regularly.
Commonest cause of errors is something falling on the screen and remaining there causing a continuous signal.
It can be a drop of rain, a hair or even dandruff.
The annoying thing is that the screen is not touch sensitive (that caused a dim display in the older models)
It is worked by light beams/receptors from the edge of the screen bezel, so the most trivial, lightest of obstacles makes a false touch.
I also suspect that the highly reflective angled bezel does not help matters.
There also seems to be a worsening of the effect (in my opinion) if you use an alternate font as the machine has to re-format every page it is looping through and ultimately locks solid.

A hard reset (see my other post) has always worked for me, and even if you have to re-register the reader and re-download the books, it is better than the alternative. Besides which it will be faster and more stable after.

I confess that if I could find another reader that fits in my shirt pocket, with a battery that lasts for weeks, and which could read my 400 Sony E-book collection, I would buy it immediately.

Well, did a "soft reset" by pushing the little button. Reader came back to life. Had to go into my reader account, I also have a 900, and re-authorize before I could d/l a library book. Lost a few minor things, like my library log-in, which I had to redo. But, we're back in business.
My thanks to all.
