One thing that they do not realize is that in years past reading had taken a backseat to other activities and the eBook thing creates more sales for them in the end by bringing read media back into the market.

Well, actually, I don't sit and read in a library. I go in, find my book or pick it up at the hold desk, and then leave.

Of course, now with ebooks available from my local library through their website, I don't even have to actually go there anymore. Well... except for a routine appearance to renew my card every couple of years or so.

(Hmm... maybe not that brush, either... )

For years, I've been saying that what small bookstores need is to work together on a method to sell ebooks easily through their own store portal, giving people a reason to keep coming in. But did anyone listen to me? Nooooo!...

I don't think buggy-whip is the right analogy. Think live theater. Movies cut into live theater, but live theater is still around. Berating those who wanted to watch movies didn't help owners of live theater venues. If I own a live theater venues, and I scream at those who go to movies, and throw them out of my theater, all I have done is lose ticket sales. Someone who did that would fail: even if not all their entertainment budget was going to live theater, I'd be a fool to throw away the potential ticket revenue from those who attend both live theater and movies.

It's the same with bookstores. Some read only paper books, some read only e-books, but some read both. If I chase away those who own a Kindle, I lose sales from those who read both. I believe that independent bookstores can survive, but not by alienating customers.

It's the Daily Mail, not to be taken seriously, think National Enquirer in North American terms. I'm sure the guy they're quoting is a Mail reader, it would be his milieu. What's really disturbing is the Brit equation that ereader = Kindle.

Where is John Cleese when we need him. I could just imagine him jumping up and down in apoplectic rage on some poor defenceless Kindle (or Nook).

I must have missed something. Books? Sociable? The last thing I want to do when reading, be it on an ereader or on a paperback, is people talking to me. Or me having to talk to them.

I suppose it is the bias showing through, and the fear of losing the way he earns his bread must not help matters either.

Well, in the video that was posted as a response, at least, he's got a humorous enough attitude towards it. He doesn't like Kindles and he doesn't want them in his town, but he's still using what I'd perceive to be a friendly, joking tone when he talks about stomping on them.

book shops need to get with the times and sell ebooks. If aussie book stores sold them I would 100% support them over buying from amazon and I can sau a lot of other people would feel the same way. Not having to fill up shelves with books means they could offer so much more giving them an edge. Think of the uni books and other books that just would not justify shelf space. Their inventory could be amazing. Think of the newbie local content they could stock at no cost and outlay per sale.
