I would first assess your lifestyle and when/where you might use your ereader. Are you a hiker/commuter/adventurer? A secret agent who must regularly avoid grenades lobbed by the KGB? A caregiver with many toddlers/monkeys hanging around? You may need a cover. If you only read in the middle of your queen size bed surrounded by silk pillows and fluffy cats, you probably don't.

And if the T1 can be dropped on a hard surface inside the house. So forget the lifestyle assessment and just get a case.

Or don't.
I have a nice, solid(but light), leather case, not much bigger than the T1, but I only use it whilst travelling(lots o' times). At home the cover comes off. I like the T1's light, slim feel and I don't agree with jwolf about any difficulty holding it. Basketball players and blacksmiths have larger hands, so there's some merit. I really like treadlightly's fluffy pillow and silky cat analogy for a nice, safe place to keep a T1. It's not like that here, but I'm feeling it! And please! jswolf, never "...forget the lifestyle assessment...". There is a quality called empathy, which you can learn or train by reading books! For example by using your ereader. |

I agree with bibahbuzemann. At home, I am usually reading on the bed or couch, and the floors are carpeted. The reader without case fits much better in my small hands. (I do use a case when taking the T1 away from home.)
It's up to the individual owner to weigh the comfort/discomfort of reading with a case versus the risk of dropping and breaking the T1. |

I also prefer to use my reader without a cover. When readers cost around 300$ or more, there was more of a need to protect the investment. But now ebook readers are a lot cheaper so it wouldn't be as great a loss if it got damaged.

It's still a loss if the T1 gets damaged because you didn't have a case. It's still going to cost $$ to replace it. It's still going to be an inconvenience. And it's still wrong to suggest to others to go without a cover.
A cover also (IMHO) makes it easier to hold the reader given that it's touch with a small bezel. |

I have no empathy for anyone who uses an eink reader without a cover and it gets broken. I do have empathy for someone who's device breaks even though there is a cover.

I am very careful with my things and like to keep them pristine. So I ordered a Kindle Touch cover for my T1 (the mCover case in an apple green color) and wouldn't you know, somehow the screen of my T1 sustained a scratch before it arrived. I have no idea how. It's small, and I only see it in certain lighting at certain angles, but it's there. The case I bought was less than $16 shipped, and is very light and non-bulky. Just wanted people thinking of the T1 to know that even with great care, the screen can be damaged.

I keep my T1 n a rubber silicone skin thing (the kind that can be removed and reused). At home, it goes in a soft nylon bag when not in use. Yesterday I took it with me on a trip. I didn't want to leave it on the bus. So I had it in my m-edge New Yorker cover (has a very hard front), and inside a padded bag that I keep in my shoulder bag for ereaders. My shoulder bag is actually a cross body back pack type of thing, (big enough for a laptop) with lots of pockets. I turned an ankle on uneven blocks, and fell like a ton of bricks. (Probably b/c I was weighed down with my shoulder bag and another bag). The point of all this--my Sony was well protected and not damaged at all. I am really thankful I had it secured in the m-edge case. (And I read an entire novel on the bus trip, using my m-edge light when it got dark. I love that light!)
Oh - and I got that cross body bag for the very reason of wanting to keep my ereader of the day secured to my body. I never have to worry about it being stolen! Last edited by booklover6; 06-10-2012 at 07:44 AM. |

Get a case but get the case thats rights for you.
So far I've used/bought 4 cases. A neoprene sleeve which was okay but didn't offer any protection to the screen. An early Navitech case which didn't really fit the T1. A hard EVA case which offers great potection but was a bind to get the ereader out and in. Final solution for me was the Skindital (type) case. Fits well, convenient to use, light fits nicely to it but most of all it makes holding T1 a great deal easier and has a very convenient hand loop. |

I use the soft cover from my old Libre Pro fits like it was made for it, wouldn't provide much protection tho, my T1 has survived a falls of about a metre onto a hardwood floor but I understand the outer glass screen is very thin and can be easily broken so if you are a "klutz" you might want to invest in a hard cover that would provide some "impact" protection, but the device seems reasonably robust for normal use and as I said it has survived a couple of "falls" to date

The major drawback for me is that it's a lint magnet. Though the naked shiny bezel is a fingerprint magnet so... Also, it adds a tiny bit of bulk all the way around the device, so it won't fit into some cases (like the official Sony T1 case). Of course it offers absolutely no protection to the screen, so it can't be considered a replacement for a cover (Hi Jon!). |

I bought a nice tailor made leather case from Gecko in the Netherlands in a dark "red wine" colour. Protects the T1 nicely and looks great. Very comfortable to read with, doesn't obscure any of the screen and feels no more awkward to hold while reading than an open book.

Silicone covers...no protection for the screen from the front. Not worth it. Get a cover.
