Yes, it gets annoying when a discussion becomes a cat-fight. I have a friend with an IPhone 4 and we often have a bit of fun doing head-to-head battles between my Galaxy Nexus and his Iphone, but it is just that - fun. The competition between different device makers is giving us, the buyers, a range of phones, tablets and e-readers that would have been straight out of science fiction 20 years ago.
I can see a good market for a range of sizes in phones/tablets (and the line between the two getting more more blurry). There will be some who want more of an "internet/computing device" and some who need a pocket size phone. Vive la difference! |

![]() That said: I live in Europe but am moving back to the US next month. Can I sign up for a voice/text-only plan (no data) in the US for my wife and I for under $80/month? Or will we have to switch phones? My iPhone4 is unlocked. ...and for what it's worth, I prefer the iPhone's current size; 4-inches won't help it as a reader--still won't be able to read PDFs easily--so not worth the extra bulk, IMO. |

For really low-usage, there's also:
Verizon and AT&T usually have the best coverage. You can use your iPhone on AT&T GoPhone prepaid without getting a data plan. They have different plans available:
If you have really, really, really low usage and only use your cellphones for emergency and stuff, you can get away with just spending $100/year ($8.33/month) on AT&T or $10/year ($0.83/month) on T-Mobile (after initial first year $100 load to reach Gold Rewards Status). Do keep in mind that both incoming calls and messages count against you. Unfortunately, if you go Verizon, you won't be able to use your iPhone (need to get a new one from them) and you're forced to get a data plan whether you go contract or prepaid if you get a smartphone. Wow! I'll have to check this out - the possibilities are endless. Yes, Arthur C Clarke actually had a device VERY similar to the modern tablet in one of his books - complete with cloud storage of files. (Good old Arthur, he had a lot of visionary stuff in his books).

There if if you go prepaid. Another thing, poster was looking for $80 for combined lines. That $80 you're quoting is just for one line. Minimum for a family plan is $60 (550 min) + $20 (1st iPhone: 300MB data) + $20 (2nd iPhone: 300MB data). Text would be another $30 for unlimited texting for both lines.

thanks 'jedd & Andrew. Looks like we'll be heading over to T-Mobile: they've a similar plan to the one you mentioned (1,000 min, unlimited text, 200mb web) for just $70 for 2 phones. This is a pleasant surprise: I had thought service in the US was much more expensive... based on old information, I guess. Thanks again!!

Service is expensive. T-Mobile is one of the few exceptions. It's actually the only exception when it comes to the big 4. Caveat with them is you won't be getting 3G/HSPA coverage with your iPhone just yet. They are refarming the GSM 1900 band to 3G but I have no idea how quickly they can proceed with the rollout.
