A skin is basically a decal that covers your kindle. It helps keep scratches off, provide a better grip, more contrast, etc.

The same case size for my Kindle3 and Kobo and I have one in Brown the other is lime green. My iPad has a multi color back cover and I have a lime and gray smart cover also a lime case that rotates. My Kindle Fire has black, brown and lime cases (they were only $7 each). There can be a lot of activity inside my bags and I'm very into lime green. You should see my Kia Soul

[QUOTE=toddos;......... If the manufacturer wanted the device to be covered, they would've shipped it with a cover..........[/QUOTE]

Incorrect - the manufacturers hope you want the device too be covered, so they can sell you one to give it the protection they know it requires....

Good thing I bought my STR when B&N was still shipping them with wall chargers .

And I like to take the non-conspiracy view. Look at cell phones, for example. Manufacturers go to great lengths to provide scratch resistant glass fronts, and then people go and put nasty plastic screen "protectors" on them. In all my years of owning smart phones (starting with the first iPhone), I've literally never scratched a screen, and I've never used a case or screen protector. Of course I'm not in the habit of dropping my phone or sliding it face-first on concrete, but I guess if that's something you're into then a screen protector would be a fine investment. Edit: Screen protectors made sense in the "bad old days" where "touch screens" were resistive touch, had plastic covers, and expected you to poke at them with sharp, pointy, plastic styluses. The Nintendo DS is a good example of that, and I did have a bunch of micro-scratches on my DS screen because I refused to use a screen protector. Modern, capacitive touch, glass-faced screens do not need screen protectors.

I should probably amend my original statement, though. I have bought several devices that did come with covers from the manufacturer (Wii remotes, one of those little handheld HD video camera things that were popular a few years ago before phones started including HD video cameras, etc), and I intentionally removed the gross, nasty, ugly silicon covers from he devices and threw them away. Because I hate covers.

For my Kindle Keyboard ereader I have the Amazon lighted leather case and one silicone skin. I keep it in the skin at home, and put it in the protective leather case when I go out.

I have two Acer Iconia tablets, a 7" and a 10". I have a leather cover for each and a TPU case for the larger one. I'd like to get an Acer bumper case for the 7" tablet, but it's too costly.

1 skin on my ipod Nano 5th gen, because I didn't like the color (green) after all.

1 lighted cover for my K3, and a knitted cover someone made for me while I was waiting for my lighted cover to arive.

1 lighted cover for my son's K4 (which I don't think he's used yet), and a cheap-o hard cover for it that we ordered to protect it because the lighted cover was way back ordered.

1 lighted cover for my Sony 350, which also has a skin to match the iPod, because I found the metal bezel too cold to hold in my hands very long - I'm very sensitive to cold.

Naked is the only way to roll.
If God had meant for man to run around naked he would have been born that way.

The only skin I have is the one I was born in.
I have one leather cover and it stays on my Nook Color. But then, I take my Nook every where I go. And I do mean every where.

I voted "other" because it depends on the device.
On my PDA and Tablet, I use both a cover and a screenprotector. I use a stylus on both.
On my ereaders (Sony650 and BBM) I only use a cover. The sony is too cold to hold "naked" and the BBM is always hiding out in my bag.
My phone neither has a cover nor a screenprotector.
My external HDD doen't have a cover either.

Skins, I don't use.

The poll is rather confusing. I have 2 covers, both home-made; one from a book and the second one assembled in the workshop from genuine leather, glue, carton etc.

I love them both.
