Pocketbook has a 9" model and they seem to have the best text-to-speech tool an the market at the moment. Also they have lots of formating options.
Regarding Sony, you could try to get a PRS-950, which is a 7" reader and loved a lot by it's owners. It's out of production, but (because Sony decided to go PRS-T1 only, the 950 is still a great device), but I'm sure, it's possible to get a second hand one online. |

The Pocketbook looks brilliant but I can't get it here for less than about £310 pounds
The 7" Sony would be perfect apart from the fact that even on eBay it's still a few hundred pounds and I think it had the touch screen with the extra layer over the eInk which made it really unclear. I'm not having much luck am I? |

No, there would not be any extra layer. The new devices use an infrared grid as a touch "layer". It does not influence readability at all. But all bif devices are quite pricy.
The PRS-T1 would be cheaper (same touch technology). |

So the 7" Sony (Daily edition it was called wasn't it?) had the new touch screen technology not the older type touch screen?

The PRS-900 (AKA Daily Edition) had the touch layer. The PRS-950 uses IR touch and has no touch layer. But they are not made anymore and may be really hard to find at a reasonable price.
