I don't have a Kindle of any version but my Sony 950 is a touch screen device and I have been using it for more than a year now. I have never had a fingerprint problem. I tend to clean the screen with Windex or eyeglass cleaner every couple of months, but I do that also with my Sony 505 which isn't touchscreen. Screens do get dusty just from being.
I'm not recommending the Kindle, I'm just saying that worries about fingerprints on touchscreen readers is way overblown based on my experience. I'd worry more about other things in how a device is built. |

To elaborate, I can see fingerprints on the screen if I hold it up to the light at an angle, but looking at if face on - ie when actually reading - they are completely invisible. It's a matte screen and fingerprints just don't show up on it at all.

With an IR touch screen, there is really no need to press it down hard enough to leave a fingerprint since the screen does not care how hard you press, the length of the tap makes a difference though.
I don't know about Sony but I wouldn't recommend using any "cleaning solution" to clean the screen, it could damage the display coating or cause discoloration. Just wet a soft cloth with clean water and wipe the dirt off once in a while should be sufficient. |

I think if I had to recommend a "budget" eReader to people [and seeing as 'tis the season, I've had to do this a lot over the last month] I'd recommend the "budget" Kindle. Personally I wouldn't trade in my Kindle Keyboard for it, but I do tend to highlight / make notes a fair bit, so for me the Keyboard is quite useful. [I'd like to recommend the Kobo to people, but every book I've checked has been cheaper - in some cases, significantly, on Amazon.

ah, lucky americans. I wanted to buy that 79 bucks Kindle, thus I clicked on it: "Not available for your country". Next best bet was one at 109 bucks. Clicked on it and looked at shippment: about 30 bucks. Taxes: about 120 bucks.
I better just read on a smartphone as well... |
