Marcy,
What kind of activities do you do most on your current NC? If you are looking for a color ereader plus some multimedia and web browsing I would recommend the Kindle Fire. For that price and the available content you will get, difficult to find a better deal. Be aware though that you probably won't be able to read or open old B&N books, I do not think Amazon will allow a Nook app on the Amazon Android Market. If you want a tablet for Magazines, browsing Internet and sporadic reading, Samsung Galaxy 7" with 3G capabilities. You don't have to get a contract and it's nice be able to connect if you find no wifi spots. I used to have one and neverd had any problem. Very light and nice screen. I sold it because got an Android cellphone and two iPads instead. The advantage of a true Android tablet like this is that you can run several ereader apps on same device, including Nook and Kindle app. With most tablets and companies relying in cloud access, I don't see lack of SD access an issue, unless you have big or confidential files. On my personal case, I don't recommend hacking tablets. Lot of people do it, even for the NC, but you become a slave of updates and it breaks original features and warranty on the original device. jocampo thanks so much for the detailed response, as well as all others who answered.
I am not interested in a Kindle due to the closed system and the lack of SD slots. I went to Best Buy and looked at the tablets there, but wasn't totally impressed, probably helped along by the clueless salesperson who couldn't tell me the differences between them. SD card is a big issue to me as I have over 2000 books and my collection is rapidly growing. I totally agree about hacking; I'd really much rather a tablet that does what I want out of the box. My experience with my rooted Nook just confirms this view. It has always been buggy and a pain after hacking; it was just the best solution at the time for what I was looking for. I just pre-ordered the Kobo Vox which seems to suit my needs. An Android tablet that I don't have to root, but designed mainly for reading which is my biggest want for my tablet. It's nice to be able to check email and do light browsing when wi-fi is available, but I really want it to read. And I'll be able to install my favorite Cool Reader if I don't like the stock reader it comes with. |
