Might be, depending on the controller and card, sd cards can be pretty slow.
Easiest way to find out would be if you could load the same book once to the sd card and once to internal memory and compare, if that's possible.
I'd certainly be interested to know.

I have had a problem with fast page flipping that I had on the PRS-650 also. I slid my finger most of the way across the screen touching the side bezel at the end of the swipe and my pages started quickly flipping even though I had lifted my finger at the end of the swipe. It did not stop flipping until I hit a page button. Then the touch screen would not respond. The reader responded to the buttons but not touch. I turned it off and on but got no touch response. I then plugged in my PRS-650 charger to the USB port and the reader began responding.

No idea what was going on there.
