There really needs to be more selection for large e-ink devices out there.

I read from my DXG at home, and my 5" (another 16% smaller than 6") when I am on the go.

i'm perfectly happy with my DXG, it's a way better experience than reading from a tiny 6 inch screen. i download allot of pdf books and reading those on anything less than a 9 inch screen is torture (at least for my eyes).

the new kindle lineup leaves me cold, they're geared towards the mass market. DX and DXG are for serious readers and researchers. hopefully another company will plug this gap by the time our DXs break down.

Staples has the DX for $279 in next week's ad, meaning October 2 to October 8.

(Go to their site, display the current ad, click on the "upcoming weekly ad" button, and go to page 10.)

The price is still $379 on Amazon's site.

Don't think so. I'm using my DX for magazines and presentations but prefer my PRS-650 from reading books. The reason is that the 650 is more handy and better for reading books which don't need a larger screen.

What this world really needs

is an e-ink reader with a letter/A4 size display and sufficient memory to handle large pdfs (>100MB) without choking on page-turns.

I'd dump my DXG for something like that in a heartbeat.

In the meantime, the DXG is the best thing available for reading pdfs.

Another disappointed would-be kindle customer here. I was really hoping for a newer DX/10" device.

Besides regular ebooks, I would like to read PDFs and manga (which are black and white and an exact fit for DX-type devices).

I wasn't so much hoping for new hardware as much as better software support: a faster display, a better image viewer, better PDF support, Japanese/international fonts support etc. Basically an update of the OS/firmware.

The only thing amazon has hinted at is that they would probably release a 10" Fire... but who cares? I mean people in the market for those type of devices probably already have bought ipads or android tablets, which both offer vastly larger software market that anything amazon will ever be able to provide. I have no problem believing amazon had a bit of trouble selling an ebook reader that costs almost $400, but given the price of the current line-up it's also very hard to believe they aren't able to cut the DXG price to something more reasonable.

Now I'm torn, because I would really like to buy a Kindle DXG but I have no intention of embarking a sinking ship, with no software updates in sight, especially a $379 one.

Edit: Looking at the new line up prices, it's painfully clear amazon is gunning for a very broad, very mainstream target - in short, people that haven't bought ereaders yet. One thing stuck me: all their devices are under $200. That's probably their new ceiling, and I would go so far as suggesting that they think releasing a reader than is more expensive than that will actually hurt their image.

The new motto is: Kindles are cheap, cheaper than tablets, netbooks and game consoles and they must be seen that way. Hence the reluctance to put out more powerful but more expensive devices.

I guess people waiting for a new DXG (me included) are sorry out of luck.

I was also hoping for a DX Touch. I guess it's not to be (my wallet is probably happy about that, though ). The Staples sale sounds like a good deal, though.

Ditto, the guy who worked on my project before me left a bunch of documents that are 200MB+, mainly due to a couple of uncompressed images that makes my DX crash in one of every two attempts to view them.

Also, the keyboard on the DX is way to small to be used comformably so I am definitely looking forward to a touch version of the DX

Not everybody agrees with that, but I certainly do. I still own a BeBook One (Hanlin V3), and think 'Whew, that's small...' every time I fire it up.

It being Vizplex and not Pearl doesn't help either; the difference is very visible once you have seen them side by side. At least to me. Again, not everyone agrees.

i don't really see the size of the DXG as a problem. it's very comfortable to hold and to me feels lighter than most hardbacks i buy. for me the larger screen size makes it a much more authentic reading experience. the K3/K4 are marketed at being novel sized but in reality the screen is smaller than the size of a novel page, so much so i find it difficult reaching a compromise between font size and having enough words in a line for my reading to flow.

anyway, to those disappointed at the lack of a new DX device i wholeheartedly recommend installing the 3.2.1 firmware port on your existing device (see the developer forums). it really adds some new life to my DXG and runs very stable indeed.
