C S Lewis' sci fi trilogy - Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra (aka Voyage to Venus) and That Hideous Strength. The hero is called Ransom.

Although written pre WW2 I believe, they are a very vivid and moving set of books, and a surprising output from C S Lewis.

It doesn't fit your specifications exactly, but I think it's a near miss:

Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein

(It's moving ever closer to the top of my to be re-read pile)

off hand though i'd say the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini.
Has anyone here read Hero With a Thousand Faces? It talks about how almost every story follows the same pattern.
Sure, it might not be announced by a prophecy or tribal ritual, but all plots are made up of a character that must react to the situation they're called/chosen too.. They are the only one that can save their families farm, win the heart of the girl, slay the dragon, win the game, etc.

Would that include Lee Child's books, all featuring Jack Reacher? Hmm, Lord of the Rings, maybe...

I recently recommended the Repairman Jack series in the adventure thread... but it fits perfectly here. Definitely check it out!
