Yep, I email things to my Kindle all the time. For a feature that some of us use frequently, you'd think that one of the other big names (B&N/Sony/Kobo) would duplicate it. Of course, for those of us with WiFi-only devices, the email service is free for us and costs Amazon some amount to maintain, so maybe nobody else sees a value proposition for the manufacturer to allow the consumer to control his own personal docs. For whatever reasons, it seems to remain a unique and somewhat-unheralded feature of Amazon's devices.

Yes as far as I know, Amazon is the only company that does this. They also charge you .15 per transfer.

It's a nice feature that I never used. Personally I always perfected to download manually.

Right now in my nook I use dropbox to automatically synchronize my files. The nice thing about this method is that I have the same content on my nook and phone so i can read from any device not just my nook/ kindle

Only for 3G transfers. It's free over WiFi.

How automatic is that? Does the Nook actually reach out to the Dropbox share without your needing to force it? It seems that every time someone says "oh but this device does this other thing" they mean, "I manually open a browser and navigate somewhere and manually download things" which is kind of...not automatic.

When working with my less-geeky relatives and friends, anything to remove a techstep is a good thing. :-)

True for k3, but not so for k2 owners, which is what I own.

It's been a while since I used the free email version, but I don't recall it being automatic. If I recall correctly you have to open your email, download the file and transfer the file over to the kindle manually.

Yes it's completely automatic, I use an app called dropsync it uses a Dropbox account and syncs any folder up to the Dropbox account. The best thing about ths solution is it completely syncs my books, last read page, and Annotations.

X - I use the free email exclusively (since I have a wifi-only Kindle), and it is completely automatic. The Kindle syncs and downloads the files whenever the Wifi is turned on.

Thanks for the info on Dropsync - although it's additional software, at least one other device has something which can be made automatic-ish. :-)

The free email might take longer but I have not heard that it takes that long.
