I was honest when I returned my broken K3 the other day. They are very generous. I don't think the money is really in the device as much as it is in a lifetime of book-buying.

When I worked at Kinko's, they had a similar way of viewing their customers. Any employee could choose to "comp" a dissatisfied customer up to something like $1,000 without having to get manager approval. They looked at the long term relationship with the customer and decided it was better to lose a little money but keep your customers coming back.

Amazon's customer service is one of the reasons I buy so many things from them.

I told them what happened and they charged me 85$ for a replacement... I must not have said the right thing or gotten someone who was not feeling generous. I was still pleased with the 85$ swap out.

did you actually call (or have them call you) kindle customer support, or was it amazon customer support? there seems to be a big difference.

I called this number : 1-866-321-8851. It's the customer support number given on the Kindle Return Policies web page found here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...p_navbox_kspot
_return?nodeId=200144510#return

I think it's kindle's customer support and not amazon customer support. Oh though it says available to US customers only. It works from Canada. I'm not sure if it's because I am close to the border or if it's because they think Canada is just another state lol..

Just as a follow-up, Amazon sent me a new Kindle as a replacement for my damaged device. It was just a short phone call. Soon, I will send my old, damaged Kindle back in the same packaging.

Once again, great customer service from Amazon.
