All small bookstore owners are in it for the love of books, they sure aren't there for the money (and I speak as an ex-bookstore manager) and this is certainly not a recent development due to ebooks... the repeal of the Net Book Agreement started the serious closures of independents in the UK once it became impossible to make a profit on bestsellers...

The last independent bookstore in my city closed a few years ago. Checking Google we have two Christian, two paranormal and a comic bookstore within a 30 mile radius. Considering the expensive commercial leases it seems only the niche stores can survive. There is only one regular independent left about 6 miles away. It's in a neighborhood of high net worth residents. And one used paperback store the size of a closet (50% off only).
