Fun article! This joke has been making the rounds in various forms ever since the Kindle hit, but that was a good write-up. Of course, the reality is that social networking lets you dangle your bookshelves, electronic or otherwise, in front of ladies you haven't even got back to your flat yet. You don't even have to carry a book home to lie about having read it.

Read it too fast this morning maybe? Missed something while reading, I don't know ... but everything I said about ebooks vs shelves, etc, still is my opinion, regardless it was a joke or not.

Heh! Cute article! I knew it wasn't serious the moment it started talking about blow-jobs.

At the same time, I must say, as nice as a full bookshelf might look, I really don't have enough space for one! I really don't have enough space for any more paperbacks now.

Wow!

First of all, the article was funny - thanks for that.

But the responses were even funnier. I've never laughed so hard while being insulted - thanks jbcohen.

I'm a geek without a doubt, and yet somehow jb makes me feel like a Luddite. One can embrace the digital without abandoning the analog. My Kindle never leaves my side, and I'd be lost without my iPod. My VOIP phone is sooo much cheaper than a landline, and my DSLR gives me great creative freedom. My computers are my connection to the entire globe.

But the first person that thinks about dismantling my bookcases, removing my turntable or selling my Argus cameras will learn that, even in the 21st Century, women are still vicious.

Hilarious article . And cuts straight to the point.

No electricity, no grid, no ebooks, no printing presses unless the publishing industry is willing to go back to old-style printing presses. Though I guess you would still have the books that have already been printed (good luck getting them to last too long though ).

But yes, I do agree that paper still has its place, until ereaders reach maturity.

Often humour doesn't travel well or perhaps is lost in translation, so to speak, so it's good to know that's not the case.

That jab might be better aimed at Microsoft just lately, with all their anti-Android threats and litigation.

I'm most attracted to a man who has a bunch of empty bookshelves. After all, if his shelves are already full, what's the point of moving in?

The origin of the 'library edition' lay in the fashion for Victorian stately homes to have a large and well-stocked library. Publishers would produce extensive handsomely-bound editions of the classics which would provide the nouveau riche industrialists with an impressive instant library. The volumes were seldom, if ever, opened, but the function of the books was merely to impress visitors with the erudition of the owner. Dunno what effect they had on blow jobs.

WTF? It's the 21st century and you, writing on a computer on the internet, are looking down on people who earned their own money?

Not only did they earn their own money...but they're too stupid to read!

The aristocrats probably got all of those, too.

Ok, you want to go there?

I'll admit I do have a tendency to look down on those who 'earned' their money by exploiting people who'd been forced off the land their families had farmed for generations and were obliged to work in conditions that would make a modern third-world sweatshop look like paradise simply to put some food in their bellies.

The majority of Victorian industrialists were ignorant louts with all the moral compass of a monkey. The aristocracy wasn't much better, noblesse oblige was a principle largely honoured in its absence, but they had at least read many of the classics, for all the good that did them.

Are you seriously, I mean seriously trying to defend Victorian capitalist values in this day-and-age? Pull the other one.
