Your e-mail address in the Kobo reader setup must match the Kobo web site account email address.

After you do a factory reset, you must re-authorise with ADE, and set your Kobo account email address. Both get cleaned out by the factory reset.

It's still showing my email address.... it did NOT get wiped out...

And I never did use Adobe... just the Kobo desktop application.

So I re-synced with Kobo... it uploaded the books again... but won't let me read them.

I had something like this before on the non-wifi Kobo - I logged out of the desktop application and logged back in, did "Update Library", then a sync. This fixed it.

This can take a while if you have a lot of books.

Well I managed to get purchased books to re-sync... although I am not sure how. They would not open... then suddenly they did. Very strange.

However I am still having the "lock-up after disconnecting" problem.

This morning I plugged into my computer... used the Kobo desktop application to sync some new books to my computer... then used the Kobo 'eject' button to disconnect. Everything seemed to close properly... the Kobo disappeared from my system tray as an external hard drive. Pulled the plug and the Kobo rebooted... added the new books... went to the "Currently Reading" page and there it froze. Nothing worked. So I had to do the power button reset... and finally everything came back up normally.

I have sent an email to Kobo about this... we'll see what sort of suggestions they make.

This seems to be a recurring problem every time I plug in to sync or just to charge.

Annoying to say the least!

maybe the eject that you're using isn't fully functioning.
i had problems at the beginning when i was weeding out what i could and couldn't do with the kobo. i have a great system now and i never use the desktop app. next time you're plugged in try ejecting from 'my computer'
right click on the kobo drive and click on eject and try it that way and not through the desktop app.
see if that helps any.

Thanks... but I tried that this morning at work after charging my Kobo.

Ejected from My Computer....both drives (since it sees the SD card as a separate drive).

However it still showed up in the tray, so I ejected from there.

And it rebooted... and froze.

Pretty well every time I plug it in to the computer, I have to reboot it with the power button.

It looks like Kobo is sending out a repair/return kit... whatever THAT involves.

I discovered today that if I go into my computer, right click on the Kobo and choose 'eject'... it does NOTHING. (win xp). I ejected both drives (kobo and SD card) and when I went back in, both drives were still showing up. Attempted to eject again... still no luck. So I did the disconnect from the system tray, followed by the usual reboot and lock up.

It IS possible that somewhere on the 800 ebooks that I have loaded onto the SD card, there may be a corrupt file. Does anyone have any idea how to track down one potentially corrupt file from hundreds?

it's in the naming scheme most likely, with an odd character or something.
not entirely sure.

that's a lot of books to keep track of, my kobo has 55 and i only put new ones onto it if i intend to read them, i have a bunch of purchased ones that i have on my hd still that i haven't loaded but i keep them stored away until i want to get to them. no need to clutter the device with that many books if i'll never get to them.

Any questionable characters that cannot be in folder or file names?

I see some folders have commas at the end, as in Clarke, Arthur,

Some filenames have apostrophes in them. Or exclamation marks.

I ran just about everything through Calibre which I thought would have cleaned up any illegal filenames.

Then again, it could be something to do with the SD card that I reformatted with FAT 32.

Having to do an extra reboot when I charge the unit isn't the end of the world... it just takes an extra 30 seconds... as long as it isn't damaging anything.

I suppose I could just move stuff from the SD card onto the main drive when I am ready to read it... and then if there are any problems I know which file it is.

Damned torrents....lol

my wife's kobo was locking up on opening any sideload book -
it took a soft reset (paperclip to the back) to unfreeze it, and a factory reset to fix it.

after that, no problems unless she lets the battery run out in sleep mode, then a full charge fixes it. she will lose her current bookmark, but that is it. apparently, according to Kovid, the kobo database is extremely prone to corruption if the device is not ejected properly ... XP is notorious for failed delayed writes ... i see it at work all the time.

on the win7 machines at home, no issues with ejecting. win7's usb power management is much better.

So Kobo is sending me a replacement unit... but I may have all the same problems IF XP isn't releasing the Kobo in a proper/timely fashion.

Yesterday I noticed that when I go in through My Computer and eject the Kobo, the designation changes from "Kobo Reader" to "External Hard Drive" or something like that. So then I still have to use the icon in the system tray to disconnect... and then it still freezes up on reboot.

Then I was thinking... maybe it's something to do with the SD card or its contents. So I removed the SD card... booted up... then dragged the current book I was reading (in its folder) from my computer into the digital editions folder of the Kobo. When I booted the Kobo up, it couldn't find my new ebook.

So the question is... when manually adding an ebook... should it go in a particular file on the Kobo... and should it remain within the file folder that Calibre set up (usually by author with the ebook and metadata info).

THAT's the folder I had dragged over... and yet Kobo couldn't find it.

I had thought of simply adding books one at a time as I was going to read them... and that way I could see if there was a corrupt file (assuming of course that the new Kobo will disconnect from my computer properly).... but if it can't find the book in the first place there is not much point in going that route. I might as well stick in the SD card and enjoy an extra reboot every time I charge up.

Sorry about the long winded post... I just want to make sure I do everything right this time around.

there's always a trial and error approach at the beginning when playing with a new device, especially one that can get corrupt so easily.

i only use calibre to transfer books to my kobo's main memory. i use ade to download the books from kobobooks that i purchase and then load that book from the my digital editions folder into calibre and load it onto the kobo like that.

you do have to be careful to eject the kobo correctly or you'll get a corrupt database for sure. i've had it happen a few times when i first started playing with it. finding a system that works specifically for you and your kobo will come with time and practice and knowing what you can do with what you have available.

as for putting books directly on the kobo i thought dragging and dropping just the epub and not the folder was the way to do it.

just a note - whenever i chose the main memory icon in calibre, and eject device from there, both drives unmount (dismount?) properly.

this holds true for the KOBO, my nook, and the PDNp that i gave my little sister. it also worked flawlessly for the MiL's k3 when my wife was test-driving it.

I stopped using Calibre after the program refused to upload epubs to the main memory of my Kobo, even though it said it was doing so. It would upload to the SD card fine, but not to the Kobo itself.

Not sure if my factory reset solved that problem or not.. but now I have more reading material than I could finish in my lifetime and I just want to get it safely onto my replacement Kobo when it arrives.
