Yes, mine did that. Put it down beside my bed overnight, next morning on powering up it looked like that. I'd put a heating pad down beside the bed, as well; so either the switch of the pad hit the screen and cracked it, or it objected to being next to something warm.

I got mine replaced no questions asked, but that was in Canada at Chapters.
Hope you can get this figured out!

I'm going to take it to the Borders store here in Australia and give it a try....I know the staff will say it is physical damage and they don't cover that.....I need to think of a cleaver come back!

Took it to Borders on Hay Street. Initially the staff gave me a Kobo support number....after an intervention by their supervisor, I was given a brand new kobo (wifi) no questions asked....good service I'd say.

Excellent news. Good on Borders for helping out promptly.

Hey ebookmax!
I would really like to know if you told them really what happened to your kobo or you made a clever comeback???
I got my kobo as a pressie on xmas day and by the 28th my screen pretty much looked like yours....I brought from borders online I have written to them but due to the holidays I think it may take awhile for a reply!
I am soooo upset...I have wanted an ereader for ages and finally got one an this happens!!! I hope they will replace it!?!?!
I'm wondering now how safe it will actually be to keep my kobo in my handbag....I'm going to be constantly worried about my screen breaking. How common do you think the screen stuffing up is??

If you are going to carry your ereader around in a handbag then please get a sturdy cover for it. A cheap buy is a rigid zipup pencil case from Smiggle.

My wife carries her Jetbook Lite around in one and it is securely protected. The case will be big enough for a 6" ereader like the Kobo.

Yes, yes, what sabredog said, please. I would say that some sort of protective case or cover is essential for just about any e-ink device, not just the Kobo, due to the glass layer that all current e-ink screens use. Their screens are very fragile, especially with even slight twists.

My Kobo dropped 1.5m down once. I almost had a heart attack. It was inside a very sturdy leather book-style cover though, and it had also landed flat on its back, so it was fine. Still no problems three months later.

@ sabredog ... what was the brand name of that case you trialled a while back? they are really good.

I bought one & have found it to give excellent protection for when I am carrying my Ko1 in handbag, o/night bag, etc.

Just to be extra sure I also put it in a bubble wrap sleeve when it's in a travel bag.

A good case can also be sourced via here

The Smiggle case though is a good option for a handbag situation.
