I've velcro'ed my Oberon cover and the 650, and am quite happy with that. Even with regular (non-industrial) velcro, it's stuck pretty tight; I'd need to use specific force to separate the reader if I wanted to do so.

It depends. I had to trim the screws and one I did a better job of cleaning the cut. It's not harming the plastic socket at all. The thumbscrew didn't get cleaned as well and there are some light scratches where the rough edges are cutting in. A stock screw should be fine, but if you're still worried, use a nylon screw. Keep in mind nylon doesn't like to stick to most things so plan on having to glue metal nuts on both ends to hold the screws.
