Amazon Announces Kindle Colorsoft

My Nook Glowlight 4 Plus uses MTP and Calibre cannot access it. It sees it but cannot access it. I get an error message every time I try. I can however use Windows file explorer to copy files to it. I wonder if Calibre can access the new Kindles.

I believe Calibre can also send files to Kindle Scribes on the later firmware versions, where the transfer protocol was switched to MTP. So my guess would be that Calibre should be able to access the new Kindles as well.

When new models come out someone has to write the code to support them.

However simple, it has to be done, and it probably isn't the top life priority of whoever does it, those numbers don't magically appear. (And I doubt that whoever does it signs up to be first to buy every device and on same day delivery.) This issue has always happened with new models, even when there wasn't the complication of USB mass storage or MTP. The issue has always been the opposite for me. I dont't want calibre automatically connecting to any of my devices. I used to cringe when I plugged in a kindle while calibre was running. It hasn't been a problem for me since I started leaving all my kindles permanently in USBnetworking mode.

You do notice the number of comments about issues with MTP and various devices in the calibre forums? It would be nice if just adding the identifiers was all that is needed. Sadly, that does not seem to be the case.

No, apparently there is more involved. When I first got my GL4+ I posted in the Calibre forum. It seems that Calibre can access the GL4+ on a Mac, but not in Windows.

I am working around it, but I would love it if Calibre could access it.

Or will be able to once the device info is given so it can be added to the Kindle MTP driver.

Surprising me not in the slightest, it appears that Amazon has no current plans to release the Colorsoft in Canada. The Basic, Paperwhite (regular and signature) and the new Scribe, yes. Colorsoft, no.

If you follow the calibre forums you'll see that issues with MTP are related to instability between the host OS (ie Windows, Mac) and the MTP support on the device itself. Expecting calibre to magically support an unstable environment is a bit much.

Yes; I know the answer I'll get is that File Explorer can access it successfully ..

The standard advice is to reboot both the PC and the eBook reader; note this is NOT putting the devices to sleep, but doibng a FULL power down of both of them.

If MTP comes with so many issues, what’s the rationale for Amazon to migrate the new devices to it instead of just continuing to use USB mass storage?

Because unplugging something that's using USB mass storage (without doing an eject or equivalent first) can leave the file system in an invalid state, if a write has not finished completely.

Also more control and DRM. That's why MS adapted PTP to MTP for the Zune.

USB Mass storage has issues, but MTP has different issues. USB Networking is an alternative to MTP (used by reMarkable and some gadgets). Android only adopted MTP after version 3 and it's a ghastly way of hiding the device file system.

Part of the issue with USB Mass Storage is using FAT32 or exFAT and some host drivers. NTFS or ext4 is far better but neither is universal. Write caching in the host OS ought to be off by default for USB Mass Storage.

If Amazon removes D&T via browser for my current Paperwhite, then I don't buy any more Kindle ebooks.

One reason is also greater than 32 G partitions. Though they are in theory possible with FAT32, MS removed formatting support, which is one reason larger memory sticks & SD cards use exFAT by default.
But it also gives Amazon total control as to what to expose to user. They can use ext4 and put database on same partition as ebooks and other files but only expose the ebooks.
