For first post, you need a Kindle (or Fire) registered to your account for D&T option to be there.

There is not a lot of detail on the second. One may hope there is some glitch or delay in assigning the correct download permissions for some accounts. Time will tell.

I'm going to try to bring this back to the Colorsoft, with a more positive spin.

I've preordered it even though I don't tend to read comics. So it's only for the covers and occasional illustration or photograph in a book. Sure it's an unneeded luxury, but for those of us that are in the Amazon ecosystem and need an upgrade (I'm still using my original Oasis, which cost $380 in 2016!), it's a nice upgrade.

The only thing I'm slightly wary of is if the text for normal reading isn't as sharp as my Oasis (I've only seen one person who tried the Colorsoft at the press event mention this on YouTube, but everyone restates it on Reddit like it's fact). I figure good hands-on reviews will be out before it ships, and thus I'll have decent info on whether to keep the order.

Edit: the reason for that question is that the image is a low resolution 360x640 image.

That picture was taken using my phone of my Kobo Touch. I didn't think a high resolution photo was necessary.

I just got the new 12th gen Paperwhite SE and can confirm this. With the Kindle registered to my account, when choosing "Download & Transfer over USB" on Amazon's web site, I get this message:

"You do not have any compatible devices registered for this content. Buy a Kindle or get the free Kindle reading app."

This is not good! Basically means your purchased books from Amazon can only ever be read on their Apps or on Kindle, no more downloading and organizing in Calibre !

Again interesting. My contacts at Kobo say that no Kobo ever showed ads such as the one you are claiming—BOL and FNAC for instance show their logos as the sleep screen but no 3rd party advertising. Other opinions is that is from v1. or 2. firmware from the font and screen layout. OTOH, a bit of research says that eyefly.com has been down and out for close to a decade so obviously not a recent image. If that image is authentic and has been sitting there for over a decade, it does say good things about the stability of eInk screens.

And for what it may be worth, the major difference between the N905 & N905B was using a removable µSD card for storage. The N905C had differences in the hardware. However the Kobo portion of the firmware was the same and none of them had advertisements according to a Kobo intern.

This fact alone is a good reason to keep an older kindle registered to your account. I was about 1.5 years behind in deDRMing my kindle books. So after reading this thread I went and downloaded about 30-40 books to 'transfer via usb' for an older, still registered kindle. Dropped them into Calibre and it worked just fine.

D&T was also available for an older kindle fire 8 that I have.

That’s really bad. If Amazon remove the option to download my ebook purchases I will be buying my ebooks elsewhere. Luckily I have four kindles already so won’t be buying a new one, but still it’s bad news

It;s not a luxury. It's a downgrade given what you say you read. The text will be darker, less sharp, and you'll need the light on when you would not need to otherwise.
