And a bunch more Endeavour Press backlist titles on US Kindle Countdown Deal...

(I'm trying to keep up with the Endeavour Press countdown deals, since I like a couple of the authors, but if you really want to pick up most/all of the titles by a particular author, it would behoove you to keep an eye out yourself too...)

Shades of Death (non-series) by Aline Templeton is $0.99 for 4 3/4 more days, going up to $3.99
link: http://www.amazon.com/Shades-Death-A.../dp/B00LR68CFQ
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Seventeen years after her death, the skeletal remains of an eleven-year-old girl are discovered buried deep in the caves of Derbyshire's Peak District.

Close to the body lies a crudely-carved clay model of a sinister jackal-headed creature.

What is the connection?

As DS Tom Ward takes charge of the police investigation, the secrets surrounding a group of now grown-up children and their sinister 'Egyptian game' are gradually revealed.

Secrets which have lain buried for almost twenty years.

Secrets which will now emerge with unexpected and devastating consequences.

When the body of a seemingly innocent and beautiful young widow is discovered, it seems the killer is still at large.

And the game is by no means over.

Tom Ward slowly peels away layers of deception that span two decades - but finds himself dangerously mixed up in a deadly plot.

Set in the rugged and forbidding landscape of the Peak District , ‘Shades of Death’ combines ritual murder, haunted underground caves and computer viruses to create a tense psychological thriller.

Aline Templeton’s books have been widely praised:

'Templeton's a considerable writer, both intelligent and intuitive' Literary Review

`A creepy combination of detective and Gothic' Sunday Post

`Aline Templeton has a wondrously deft, unpretentiously beautiful style, full of good things' - Hampstead & Highgate Express

`An enjoyably macabre tale . . . Finely-written and strongly characterised' - Oxford Times.

Aline Templeton lives in Edinburgh with her husband, in a house with a balcony built by an astronomer to observe the stars over the beautiful city skyline. She has worked in education and broadcasting and has written numerous articles and stories for newspapers and magazines. Her books have been published in translation in several European countries as well as in the United States.

A Death to Remember (non-series) by Roger Ormerod is $0.99 for 2 3/4 more days, before going up to $3.99.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Death-Remember.../dp/B00L6H0XA8
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Fifteen months ago Cliff Summers was brutally assaulted.

Recovered, although still suffering from memory loss, Cliff returns to his hometown with no job, no home and no prospects.

Also newly returned is Tony Clayton, a local garage owner who’s just been released from prison after serving time for the attack on Cliff.

Cliff’s plan to forget the assault and rebuild his life is scuppered when the two men meet.

Not only is Clayton adamant that he’s been wrongly accused – his wife has gone missing, and he wants Cliff’s help.

It soon becomes obvious that Cliff’s lost memory is the key to this and several other mysteries.

And with the help of pretty Nicola Waldon – who has replaced him in his role as Social Security Inspector – Cliff starts to investigate the events of that fateful day.

But Cliff’s memory is patchy, and as he isn’t even sure of who he really is he can’t be certain of his level of involvement in the crimes that emerge.

Faced with murders, disappearances, drug-dealing and blackmail, Cliff and Nicola soon find themselves out of their depth…

And very quickly 'A Death To Remember' Becomes Impossible to escape.

'A Death To Remember' is a chilling mystery story that is perfect for fans of Nikki French and Peter Robinson.

Praise for Roger Ormerod:

‘The story gallops along with an irresistible momentum...always fascinating...the shape is near perfect. The characterisation is splendid, the situations dramatic and compelling, the style economic and energetic. What more can a book offer, or a reader ask?’ - Reginald Hill

"Eclectic, underrated Ormerod can be relied upon to come up with the startling goods" Sunday Times

"I am glad to announce that the detective novel is still alive and well in Mr Ormerod's skillful hands " The Spectator,

"Fast-moving, with well-orchestrated jiggery-pokery; not unlike an early Dick Francis in tone and method” Times Literary Supplement

Roger Ormerod (1920-2005) was a prolific writer of ingenious and densely plotted crime novels - some 35 in all - which were published in the UK and the USA. He lived in Wolverhampton and amongst other things worked as a civil servant and as a Social Security inspector – backgrounds which he made full use of in his fiction, as he did with his hobbies of painting and photography.

A Shot at Nothing is the third book in Roger Ormerod's Philipa Lowe/Oliver Simpson series, and is $0.99 for 4 3/4 more days, before going up to $3.99.

blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Philipa Lowe is looking for a new house.

But her friend Oliver does not approve, particularly of the one she most wants to see.

In spite of his reluctance, she goes ahead, and on first sight of it she is full of enthusiasm.

True, it is too big for her, true that she could barely afford it, but at once she falls in love with it.

Oliver's reluctance is soon explained, as this was the house where a murder took place.

Six years before, Clare Steadman was committed to prison for the murder of her husband.

Yet Philipa is not discouraged She is intrigued. When she discovers that Oliver himself was intimately involved in the case, she is fascinated.

It is when Oliver declares that he believes Clare to have been innocent that Philipa interests herself in the evidence — but then the facts come to light, and her innocence seems undeniable.

For how could Clare, with the gun room doors locked against her, and the French window jammed by her own efforts with a shotgun, have reached her husband, in order to make use of the second barrel?

And at what was the third shot fired? At nothing?

Philipa is determined to find out...even if it means risking her own life.

Dead March for Penelope Blow is in the Thomas Littlejohn series by George Bellairs (sorry, it's a long series and I was too lazy to count down on the SYKM website). It's $0.99 for 1 3/4 more days, before going up to $3.99.

Who would kill Miss Penelope, a kind, Christian woman known best by Claplady, the local vicar, and Nesbury’s Salvation Army?

Was jealousy the cause of her death, or simply madness?

As Scotland Yard come under pressure to prosecute Miss Penelope’s killer, more witnesses crawl out of the woodwork to give their side of the story.

How many crimes must be committed before the mystery of the Blow family is finally solved?

Unwilling Accomplice is the seventh in the Munch Mancini series by Barbara Seranella. It's $1.99, down from $2.99, for about 17 more hours.

blurb:

No one knows you like family. For Munch Mancini, that’s what makes them dangerous.

“Barbara Seranella’s wonderful creation Munch Mancini is one of the most engaging, complex characters in mystery fiction today.” — Harlan Coben, author of NO SECOND CHANCE

Miranda "Munch" Mancini is finally feeling confident in the life she’s carved out for herself and her adopted daughter, Asia. With a good job as an auto mechanic, a house and a dog, the pair are doing just fine. Until Asia’s aunt and two cousins suddenly reappear, on the run from the Witness Protection Program and in need of Munch’s help. When one of the young cousins, Charlotte, goes missing after the death of a school friend, Munch turns to her sometimes-boyfriend and full-time cop Rico Chacon for help in unravelling Charlotte’s complicated life before it’s too late to save her from becoming one of Hollywood’s lost street kids…or worse.

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Stone Dog by Robert Mitchell, whose bio-blurb says that he has won an Australian writing prize for another novel, and that he himself has had former marine salvage experience. This one is a period-set international sunken treasure hunt thriller originally out from Queensland-based small publisher Boolarong Press in 1995.

20th September 1917 – Wakaya, Fiji.

The Count Felix von Luckner, Master of the German raider Seeadler, lowers a sealed iron chest into the waters of a small unnamed bay under cover of darkness.

17th December 1971 – Cairns, Australia.

The chance mention of von Luckner’s name revives memories of boyhood tales of the secrets of that far-off night, and of the iron chest watched over by the stone dog.

But were the tales, told by Uncle Max, bosun on the Seeadler those fifty-four years ago, true, or were they merely that, yarns, nothing more?

And if true – would the chest still be there?

And if true – will it be worth the bloodshed?

15 Mysteries from Gladys Mitchell's "Mrs. Bradley Mysteries" are on for today only as part of US Amazon.com's daily deals, for $1.99. They include 'Speedy Death', the first in series, which I've been searching for for some time.

I really enjoy this series. She is considered one of the three Grand Dames of Mysteries, along with Agatha Christie and my favourite of the three, Dorothy Sayers. My personal view only, is that her writing may not be quite of the same standard, but never-the-less, I enjoy them and recommend to others who like their ilk. If her plots are a bit less crisp, she makes up for it by taking more risks in terms of social conventions.

She is? I'd regard myself as a fan of the "golden age" of British detective fiction, and I can quite honestly say that I've never heard of her!

The four authors who are generally regarded as being the "queens" of the genre are Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham, and Dorothy L. Sayers (who, as with you, is my favourite).

I'll have to give her a go - thanks for the recommendation.

Felony and Mayhem Press is having a "Thanksgiving Week" ebook sale, with backlist titles for $4.99.

From their blog:

Quote:
November 24, 2014
Thanksgiving Week Ebook Sale!

It’s Thanksgiving week, a week of heavy travel, and lots (and lots!) of family time. Here at Felony & Mayhem we hold the opinion that nothing helps a person get through long flights, weather cancellations, and that post-Thanksgiving slump like a good book. And if you make it an ebook, well, then you can take as many with you as your heart desires. So this week, we’re offering a serious ebook sale: each title in our ebook catalog for just $4.99. Go ahead, read the entire Julian Kestrel series, it’s a long weekend!

Here are some highlights from the backlist: Caroline Graham’s “Inspector Barnaby” series, as well as her very funny stand-alone parody of a country house mystery, Murder at Madingley Grange; Bob Cook’s Paper Chase and Disorderly Elements, two underrated espionage capers that never take themselves too seriously; Sarah Rayne’s chilling trio of psychological suspense novels (deliciously long too; now here are some books to get lost in!); the genteel yet felonious world of Elizabeth Daly’s 1940s New York; Maggie Joel’s The Past and Other Lies, with a family at its center that will make your family seem utterly angelic, no matter their shortcomings! And, of course, get to know Ngaio Marsh’s Inspector Alleyn, from Enter a Murderer to Singing in the Shrouds.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Felony and Mayhem don't offer ebooks of all of their titles, but I spot-checked a few that are offered as ebooks, and the ones I did check were all marked down to $4.99 on F&M's own site. I've also spot-checked on Kobo US and Kindle US, and the prices don't seem to be matched, although I just got the email about this, and so the matching (if any) may not have happened yet.

One other author/series of theirs that I like, not referenced in their blog post, is the Blotto and Twinks series by Simon Brett - they offer four titles in that series as ebooks.

I also think that they must not have e-rights, at least in the US, to many of their books. For example, Germanicus, by one of my favorite historical authors, David Wishart, is listed as available in DTB from them, but not as an ebook. It is available as an ebook in the UK from Hodder, but doesn't seem to be available in the US (at least not on Amazon or Kobo) as an ebook at all. (Glad I could travel to get that series...)

Similarly, Annamaria Alfieri's City of Silver is available from F&M only in DTB, but offered as an ebook in the US by Minotaur.

And similarly actually for most of their titles...available in DTB, but not in ebook...sigh!

For me, $4.99 is REALLY the upper limit I'll pay for a backlist ebook, and even then I have to really really want it, but if they happen to offer an ebook you want, their ebooks are usually a lot more than that.

Here's a link to their home page:

Free from the author('s republishing consortium) via KDP Select @ Amazon:

True-Life Adventure by Edgar Award-winner Julie Smith (ISFDB, Wikipedia), 1st in her humorous-looking Paul McDonald series starring an ex-reporter turned mystery writer, set in San Francisco. This originally came out from Warner Books in 1985.

He KNOWS TOO MUCH—but he doesn't know what he knows…

Things were going lousy for ex-reporter Paul Mcdonald: No money, no girl friend, no bright new career as a mystery novelist … and then along came private investigator Jack Birnbaum with an offer: he’d detect, and Paul would write the client reports. It wasn’t much, but it would keep Spot the cat in Kitty Queen tidbits.

But then somebody poisoned Jack in Paul’s own living room. A day that begins with a body in your house really ought to get better, but next comes burglary and after that, assault-by-cop. And Paul’s got a feeling that’s just the beginning. There must have been something someone didn't want him to know in one of those client reports. But what?

The wise-cracking, funny, but slightly depressed ex-journalist better become an ace private investigator in about two seconds—or end up like his detective mentor.

Birnbaum's last report concerned a kidnapped child, so Paul begins there. The trail leads him to the laboratory of a Nobel laureate geneticist, and then to San Francisco City Hall, where an extremely nasty surprise awaits. But there’s an upside—lovely witness Sardis Kincannon. Nothing like falling in love while you’re running for your life!

Oh yeah! Not the first time I've mixed up the name of the author and the name of a character....

And I too like his Mrs. Pargeter books, and the first several of the Feathering ones too...

Bargain @ $1.99 for today only (Nov 25th) according to the newsletter from Open Road Media (couponable @ Kobo, should be available in all the standard US stores, seems geo-restricted to US-only, etc.):

The Nostradamus Traitor by the late British author John Gardner (SYKM, Wikipedia; apparently there's an identically-named US novelist as well), a vintage espionage action thriller in his Herbie Kruger series starring an aging British Intelligence spy, originally out from Doubleday in 1979.

SYKM notes that this was a finalist for the Golden Dagger Award, as was the next-in-series, and that Gardner was also chosen by Ian Fleming's estate to continue the Bond novels, as well.

A widow’s plea sucks a spy into the web of a decades-old plot against the Third Reich

Though she approaches the guard at the Tower of London like any other tourist, Frau Fenderman’s question does not concern the crown jewels. She wants to know where her husband, a Nazi spy captured in 1941, was executed and buried. The inquiry is passed on to Big Herbie Kruger, an aging spy who is smart enough to know that, three decades after war’s end, the darkest secrets are yet to be told.

A massive man whose heavy features obscure a nimble intelligence, Kruger loves drink, Mahler, and espionage. Digging into Fenderman’s story, he uncovers a staggering plot against the life of one of Hitler’s right-hand men—a scheme whose failure nearly lost England the war. As he uncovers more about this forgotten operation, Kruger finds that the oldest secrets are sometimes the most lethal.
