I have a personal symbol. A totem, if you will. 30 years ago I was walking around downtown Bangkok, looking for a tattoo parlor to get this totem tattooed on the back of my shoulder blade. Just a little one... perhaps a 2" circle size. Just so it would always be with me. I really didn't like the idea of the tattoo, but I did want this with me always.

Then I passed a jewelery shop... and got the idea... How about this symbol carved in white gold, about 1" size, on a strong stainless steel chain? I went into the shop, dickered with the owner for a good price, and two days later he delivered it to my hotel.

With the exception of a few minutes for chest x-rays, it's been around my neck every day since. And no pain.

I don't have any piercings, not even ears. (Despite my mother's desperate bids to change my mind about getting my ears pierced.) I just don't see the point in putting holes in bits of my body. Especially when it would then mean I'd have to spend money on things to put in them!

The only reason why I got my ears pierced, was because I was always losing ear-rings. Especially when answering the office 'phone.

Some of them were very expensive too.

I think they pierced my ears (with a gun) when I was 10 years old. So maybe I don't really remember how much it hurt. When I got pierced, it hurt like hell for a couple of seconds and then my ear throbbed for the rest of the day. I also developed a bump after a couple of weeks, which took a couple of months of intense treatment to heal.

I changed the hoop after six months I think. I really hated it. Everytime I combed my hair, my hairbrush would catch in the hoop and pull at it.

Irdal, be warned tattoos are addictive. I have 3 and am itching to get more but it's quite expensive and hard to find a good tattooist in Hong Kong - the lady I want is booked up until August!

Piercings were never as attractive for me, had ear lobes done and then the top of one ear which failed to heal and that really put me off any more.

My tattooist has a 6 month waiting list as well. As for tattoos being addictive ... I haven't even got my first tattoo yet, and I'm planning the next one already

I hope you have a good doctor who knows how to take blood ! It's nearly painless if you have a good doctor. And don't look at the needle

I like the idea of a bar. It can be useful when looking for extra hanger space, or a place to hitch one's horse.

You and me, babe! I just got back from the hospital, having some tests done. I think they drew out half my body fluid! Because I wasn't with my wife, the hospital sent around one of their young hostesses to guide me through the testing on the assumption that I couldn't speak the language. (Ever so much faster through the process this way! No waiting in each waiting room!) I didn't see any reason to say otherwise.

Just to be on the safe side, I told the cute young woman that I was really afraid of the needles and that she needed to hold my hand during the test. She believed me.

.Nice kid. I think she would have drawn the line if I said I need the same help for the urine specimen...
