Not really. If you buy an ebook in the internal store you get not EPUB but their own KEPUB, with own DRM. I think it is not possible to just copy Ebooks from the Kobo reader to the sony reader, and use them right?

When you buy an ebook with Kobo you get both the epub and the kepub. As it happens, the epub file will work nicely with a Sony, a Bookeen or any other device supporting epubs.

I've bought about 10 books from the Kobo store. I sideload them onto my T1 via Calibre with no problems. Same goes for the many books I've bought from Amazon. Shame that the Sony store is such hard work (and very seldom has the books I'm looking for) or they'd get more business from me.

The point being made is that Kobo and Amazon rely on their stores to sell content in order to make money. Sony has an ebook store as well, but their stake in it isn't as big as the one they've always had in hardware.

In other cases involving other kinds of media, Sony does sell hardware to secure software sales, but that isn't as true in this particular case. Sony hasn't bought into ebook publishing as they have into music, film and gaming.

Malice? I never suggested Amazon was malicious. I stated they discourage users from buying from other sources. Please don't put words into my mouth.

Anyway, increasingly it looks like the T3 is not worth buying. I'll be in the market for a rootable Android e-reader with a front-light. After using a rooted Nook STR, I don't think I can go back. It's flexible and stable.

I buy many of my Kindle books direct from Baen. How are Amazon discouraging me from doing this?

Where did you answer it? I've looked back several pages in this thread and I don't see it. Apologies if I've overlooked your answer.

With the greatest of respect, you can't be looking very hard.

To state that it is a simple matter for a non-Kindle user to buy and use a book from Amazon site is disingenuous. One must strip the DRM and then convert the mobi to an epub. This is not a simple process for someone who did not have a career in IT like you, Harry T. Why do you insist on ignoring this obvious fact?

From another angle, am I right in thinking that Amazon is making it very difficult for non-Kindle users to buy e-books from Amazon? Can a Sony or a Kindle connect to the Amazon site and buy a book and load it *directly* onto their e-reader? No, they can't.

On the other hand, I presume that a non-kobo / Sony can connect to their respective sites and purchase a book. Is that correct? If this is the case, Amazon is discouraging platforms other than the Kindle. If I'm wrong about this, please let me know.

That's a good point, assuming Ben doesn't sell Kindle compatible books. Most people on this board probably have Calibre and can de-DRM or convert to an appropriate format just fine but I suspect a large number of people have no idea whatsoever. My mother can surf the net and send emails but I couldn't see her being able to remove DRM from a book on her own.

But there is no conversion needed when you buy Kindle books (usually .mobi). Don't forget that Amazon is not the one and only seller of Kindle books.

You might want to read what I actually said, rather than what you seem to have invented.

I did not say that it was a simple matter for a non-Kindle user to buy a book from Amazon. I said that Amazon users could buy books at non-Amazon sites such as Baen. This was in response to your false claim that Amazon "discourage users from buying from other sources".

It's also disingenuous to not point out that this is only for a certain group of books, those using DRM (mainly from big publishers). There are literally hundreds of small publishers, digital first publishers and independent authors who sell Mobi format books that can be loaded on the Kindle very easily, many have offered the format for longer than the Kindle has existed. As for DRM stripping not being easy for someone without an IT career, my mother who barely uses a computer was able to set it up in about 15 minutes by following a plug-in tutorial for Calibre on Dear Author and conversion from there is two clicks.

And a Kindle can't connect directly to Sony to do the same. What's your point.
