Get the WS Deal on this Literary Fiction for $5.98. Get the Audio Alone for $21.95.

By "audio alone," I mean, of course, at Audible.

I'm sure that there is here some hype and from a reviewer who does not hold the average American values and sensitivities, but The New York Times Book Review says that the book is "As close to flawless as any reader could ask for."

In case you are not familiar with this book (as I wasn't until I was preparing this post), it apparently is very graphic and gut wrenching, at least at points. If you are bothered by such things and/or unfamiliar with the book, I especially suggest that you read some of the preview and some of the reviews before purchasing it.

Title: Bastard Out of Carolina: A Novel.
Genre: Fiction (Literary Fiction).
Author(s): Dorothy Allison.
Price: $5.98 ($1.99 ebook (marked down) + $3.99 Whispersync audio).
Regular Price of Audio, by Itself, at Audible: $21.95.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews: 4.4 stars/323 reviews (Amazon).
Audio Rating/Number of Ratings: 4.4/376 ratings.
Pages/Audio Length: 326/11 hours and 17 minutes.
Narrator(s): Elizabeth Evans.
Audible URL: http://www.audible.com/pd/Fiction/Ba...ok/B00A6GK9UE/.
Amazon URL (you can get the whole Whispersync deal here): https://www.amazon.com/Bastard-Out-C.../dp/B001R9DHP8.
Comments: The book/ebook is the #1 seller in three categories in the regular Amazon bookstore and the Kindle bookstore.
Book Description (Amazon):
The publication of Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina was a landmark event. The novel's profound portrait of family dynamics in the rural South won the author a National Book Award nomination and launched her into the literary spotlight. Critics have likened Allison to William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Harper Lee, naming her the first writer of her generation to dramatize the lives and language of poor whites in the South. Since its appearance, the novel has inspired an award-winning film and has been banned from libraries and classrooms, championed by fans, and defended by critics.
Greenville County, South Carolina, is a wild, lush place that is home to the Boatwright family-a tight-knit clan of rough-hewn, hard- drinking men who shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who get married young and age too quickly. At the heart of this story is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a bastard child who observes the world around her with a mercilessly keen perspective. When her stepfather Daddy Glen, "cold as death, mean as a snake," becomes increasingly more vicious toward her, Bone finds herself caught in a family triangle that tests the loyalty of her mother, Anney-and leads to a final, harrowing encounter from which there can be no turning back.

Now available in a twentieth anniversary keepsake edition with a new afterword by the author.

$1.95 -- Where the Light Gets In -- Kimberly Paisley/ K Paisley --> 5.4 hrs/ R-4.7 --> memoir

Where the Light Gets In: Losing My Mother Only to Find Her Again

Whispersync: Audible ($1.95) | Kindle ($13.99)

Download the accompanying reference guide

Many know Kimberly Williams-Paisley as the bride in the popular Steve Martin remakes of the Father of the Bride movies, the calculating Peggy Kenter on Nashville, or the wife of country megastar Brad Paisley. But in 2014, Williams-Paisley revealed a tragic secret: Her mother had been diagnosed with a rare form of dementia called primary progressive aphasia at the age of 61.

In Where the Light Gets In, Williams-Paisley tells the full story of her mother's illness, from diagnosis through the present day, drawing on her memories of her relationship with the fascinating, complicated, and successful woman who raised her so well. She describes educating herself on her mother's condition, letting go of the shame and secrecy that surrounded it, and finding unexpected humor and grace in a terrible situation. Her book also chronicles the ways in which her family's bond was strengthened by the experience, to becoming an awareness advocate, to accepting the woman her mother has become. It is a heartrending and inspiring reminder of how unbreakable our relationships with our mothers are.

$3.99 -- How to Be a Woman -- Caitlin Moran/ Caitlin Moran --> 8.8 hrs/ R-4.3 --> memoir

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($11.99)

Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them?

Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from the riot of adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother. With rapier wit, Moran slices right to the truth—whether it's about the workplace, strip clubs, love, fat, abortion, popular entertainment, or children—to jump-start a new conversation about feminism. With humor, insight, and verve, How To Be a Woman lays bare the reasons why female rights and empowerment are essential issues not only for women today but also for society itself.

£2.99 -- The Marble Collector -- Cecelia Ahern/ A McMahon, et al --> 8.1 hrs/ R-4.1 --> contemp

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible (£2.99) | Kindle (£5.24)

A forgotten childhood. A discovered life.

The poignant new best seller from Cecelia Ahern.

What if you had only one day to find out who you really were? When Sabrina Boggs stumbles upon a mysterious collection of her father's possessions, she discovers a truth where she never knew there was a lie. The familiar man she grew up with is suddenly a stranger to her. An unexpected break in her monotonous daily routine leaves her just one day to unlock the secrets of the man she thought she knew. A day that unearths memories, stories and people she never knew existed. A day that changes her and those around her forever.

The Marble Collector is a thought-provoking novel about how the most ordinary decisions we make can have the most extraordinary consequences for how we live our lives. And how sometimes it's only by shining a light on someone else that you can truly understand yourself.

Dear Listener,

Guess what? I'm falling in love! With Mack McAfee.

My baby daughter, Noelle, and I have been living next door to Mack since the spring. I'm still a little wary about our relationship, because I haven't always made good decisions when it comes to men. My baby's father, David Rhodes, is testament to that. I'm so worried he might sue for custody.

In the meantime, the World War II letters I found are a wonderful distraction. Both Mack and I are trying to learn what happened to the soldier who wrote them and the woman he loved.

Come by sometime for a glass of iced tea and I'll show you the letters. Plus I'll tell you the latest about Grace and Olivia, my brother Linc and his wife, Lori (who tied the knot about five minutes after they met!), and all our other mutual friends. Oh, and maybe Mack can join us….

Sorry, don't have time but to give you the basics . . . .

WS Deal on The Life We Bury (psychological thriller) by Allen Eskens--$6.48. Versus Audbile $21.95 for audio.

There are 3,637 reviews, so I'm hoping enough people are familiar with it/the author to check into it. 4.4 stars.

Killing Floor --> Jack Reacher Series (book 1 of 21)

Whispersync: Audible (£2.99) | Kindle (£4.99)

Killing Floor is the first book in the internationally popular Jack Reacher series. It presents Reacher for the first time, as the tough ex-military cop of no fixed abode: a righter of wrongs, the perfect action hero.

Jack Reacher jumps off a bus and walks fourteen miles down a country road into Margrave, Georgia. An arbitrary decision he's about to regret. Reacher is the only stranger in town on the day they have had their first homicide in 30 years.

The cops arrest Reacher and the police chief turns eyewitness to place him at the scene. As nasty secrets leak out, and the body count mounts, one thing is for sure: They picked the wrong guy to take the fall.

I actually may have gotten the same bargain. It was about the same time. Mine is an LG phone, no contract. I think that I paid around $11. Unbelievable deal. But I wanted to start using it for more than listening to audiobooks,

I said that the phone didn't recognize the 32 gb memory card that I installed. Actually, the phone does recognize that the 32 gb has been added, but it won't use any of it for some reason. The first, and only so far, call to LG tech support was not helpful.

I may end up doing what you suggested. The phone's good for nothing now but being a paperweight.

Thanks.

The Glorious Ones by Francine Prose is on sale for $1.99 and the audiobook is $3.99.

The Glorious Ones are an unlikely troupe—there’s Armanda, the cheerful dwarf and ex-nun; chattering Columbina; Pantalone the miser; and the wicked Brighella; all led by Flaminio Scala, the self-proclaimed most courageous man in Christendom. They travel up and down seventeenth-century Italy, performing in palaces and poor villages alike. For all their wild differences, not one of them is prepared for the arrival of the mysterious Isabella, their new boss.

I found this to be a fun little short novel with a wicked and sly sense of humor.

If you check your local Public Library you may be able to check out the book to save $1.99. Both Brooklyn and New York City have the book.
