$3.95 -- Lost Among the Living -- Simone St James/ Justine Eyre --> 10.4 hrs/ R-4.3 --> historical

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($9.99)

For fans of historical fiction and Gothic romance, an atmospheric ghost story from the award-winning author of The Haunting of Maddy Clare.

England, 1921. Three years after her husband, Alex, disappeared, shot down over Germany, Jo Manders still mourns his loss. Working as a paid companion to Alex's wealthy, condescending aunt, Dottie Forsyth, Jo travels to Wych Elm House, the family's estate in the Sussex countryside. But there is much she never knew about her husband's origins...and the revelation of a mysterious death in the Forsyths' past is just the beginning.

All is not well at Wych Elm House: Dottie's husband is distant, and her son was grievously injured in the war. Footsteps follow Jo down empty halls. Items in her bedroom are eerily rearranged. The locals say the family is cursed and that a ghost in the woods has never rested. And when Jo discovers her husband's darkest secrets, she wonders if she ever really knew him. Isolated in a place of deception and grief, she must find the truth or lose herself forever.

And then an eerily familiar stranger arrives at Wych Elm House....

$4.99 -- Montana Sky -- Nora Roberts/ Erika Leigh --> 15.9 hrs/ R-4.2 --> romance

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($9.95) | Kindle ($7.99)

When Jack Mercy died, he left behind a lot of enemies...and a ranch worth nearly twenty million dollars. Now his three daughters—each born of a different marriage, and each unknown to the others—are gathered to hear the reading of the will.

Willa, the only one who knew her father, boldly expects that everything will be hers. Tess, who has reluctantly flown in from Hollywood, just hopes to fly back with as much cash as possible—as soon as possible. And Lily Mercy would be grateful for anything; she has learned to expect disappointment, even cruelty, from men.

But the women are shocked to learn that before any of them can inherit, they must live together on the ranch for one year. They are sisters...and strangers. Now they face a challenge: to put their bitterness aside and live like family. To protect each other from danger—and unite against an enemy who threatens to destroy all. And finally, to weave together three very different worlds in this beautiful and isolated place called Montana....

PRH has updated TryAudioBooks.com with yet another new freebie. If you'd like to get "The Lost Art of Mixing" by Erica Bauermeister you can download it by signing up for their newsletter here.

Quote:
Lillian and her restaurant have a way of drawing people together. There's Al, the accountant who finds meaning in numbers and ritual; Chloe, a budding chef who hasn't learned to trust after heartbreak; Finnegan, quiet and steady as a tree, who can disappear into the background despite his massive height; Louise, Al's wife, whose anger simmers just below the boiling point; and Isabelle, whose memories are slowly slipping from her grasp. And there's Lillian herself, whose life has taken a turn she didn't expect....

Their lives collide and mix with those around them, sometimes joining in effortless connections, at other times sifting together and separating again, creating a family that is chosen, not given. A beautifully imagined novel about the ties that bind - and links that break - The Lost Art of Mixing is a captivating meditation on the power of love, food, and companionship.
PRH rotates these out in an irregular basis so you never know when it might go away. If you're interested don't delay.

Enjoy!

Lord Sebastian Hawthorne is equally determined to stop his brother in his tracks. Sebastian has never forgiven Julian for making him a vampire. But unlike Julian, Sebastian sees humans as more than cattle to be dominated...and bled dry. With the help of Theodosia Ambrose, clockwork expert, he vows to thwart his brother's plans at any cost. Nova --> no longer free

Spoiler:
*36:00:00*

The clock activates so suddenly in my mind, my head involuntarily jerks a bit to the side. The fog vanishes, dissipated in an instant as though it never was. Memories come slotting into place, their edges sharp enough to leave furrows, and suddenly I know. I know exactly who I am.

My name is Lia Johansen, and I was named for a prisoner of war. She lived in the Tiersten Internment Colony for two years, and when they negotiated the return of the prisoners, I was given her memories and sent back in her place.

And I am a genetically engineered human bomb.

Lia Johansen was created for only one purpose: to slip onto the strategically placed New Sol Space Station and explode. But her mission goes to hell when her clock malfunctions, freezing her countdown with just two minutes to go. With no Plan B, no memories of her past, and no identity besides a name stolen from a dead POW, Lia has no idea what to do next. Her life gets even more complicated when she meets Michael Sorenson, the real Lia’s childhood best friend.

Drawn to Michael and his family against her better judgment, Lia starts learning what it means to live and love, and to be human. It is only when her countdown clock begins sporadically losing time that she realizes even duds can still blow up. If she wants any chance at a future, she must find a way to unlock the secrets of her past and stop her clock. But as Lia digs into her origins, she begins to suspect there’s far more to her mission and to this war, than meets the eye. With the fate of not just a space station but an entire empire hanging in the balance, Lia races to find the truth before her time—literally—runs out.

The Annotated Sword of Shannara --> Sword Of Shannara (book 1 of 3) --> details

Spoiler:
35th Anniversary Edition --> Free Teachers Guide - download PDF

THE PHENOMENAL EPIC OF GOOD AND EVIL LIKE IT’S NEVER BEEN EXPERIENCED BEFORE

Thirty-five years ago, Terry Brooks brought to life a dazzling world in The Sword of Shannara. Nineteen more Shannara volumes would follow, making the series one of the most popular fantasy epics of all time. Now comes a fully annotated collector’s edition of the novel that started it all—featuring never-before-shared insights into the classic tale, an all-new introduction by the New York Times bestselling author, and replicas of the original sketches for some of the long-lost, black-and-white paintings by the Brothers Hildebrandt that decorated the original edition, and a replica of the original Hildebrandt central color plate on the back of the jacket..

Long ago, wars ravaged the world. In peaceful Shady Vale, half-elfin Shea Ohmsford knows little of such troubles. Then the giant, forbidding Allanon reveals that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord is plotting to destroy everything in his wake. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness is the Sword of Shannara, which can be used only by a true heir of Shannara. On Shea, last of the bloodline, rests the hope of all the races.

Soon a Skull Bearer, dread minion of a mighty evil, flies into the Vale, seeking to destroy Shea. To save his home, Shea must flee, drawing the Skull Bearer after him in menacing pursuit.

Thus begins the enthralling Shannara epic, a spellbinding tale of adventure, magic, and myth.
Quote:
Blue Monday --> Frieda Klein Series (book 1 of 5) --> no longer free

Spoiler:
The stunning first book in a new series of psychological thrillers introducing an unforgettable London psychotherapist

Frieda Klein is a solitary, incisive psychotherapist who spends her sleepless nights walking along the ancient rivers that have been forced underground in modern London. She believes that the world is a messy, uncontrollable place, but what we can control is what is inside our heads. This attitude is reflected in her own life, which is an austere one of refuge, personal integrity, and order.

The abduction of five-year-old Matthew Farraday provokes a national outcry and a desperate police hunt. And when his face is splashed over the newspapers, Frieda cannot ignore the coincidence: one of her patients has been having dreams in which he has a hunger for a child. A red-haired child he can describe in perfect detail, a child the spitting image of Matthew. She finds herself in the center of the investigation, serving as the reluctant sidekick of the chief inspector.

Drawing readers into a haunting world in which the terrors of the mind have spilled over into real life, Blue Monday introduces a compelling protagonist and a chilling mystery that will appeal to readers of dark crime fiction and fans of In Treatment and The Killing.

The Templar Legacy --> Cotton Malone Series (book 1 of 7) --> details

Spoiler:
The ancient order of the Knights Templar possessed untold wealth and absolute power over kings and popes . . . until the Inquisition, when they were wiped from the face of the earth, their hidden riches lost. But now two forces vying for the treasure have learned that it is not at all what they thought it was–and its true nature could change the modern world.

Cotton Malone, onetime top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, is enjoying his quiet new life when an unexpected call to action reawakens his hair-trigger instincts–and plunges him back into the cloak-and-dagger world he thought he’d left behind.

It begins with a violent robbery attempt on Cotton’s former supervisor, Stephanie Nelle, who’s far from home on a mission that has nothing to do with national security. Armed with vital clues to a series of centuries-old puzzles scattered across Europe, she means to crack a mystery that has tantalized scholars and fortune hunters through the ages by finding the legendary cache of wealth and forbidden knowledge thought to have been lost forever when the order of the Knights Templar was exterminated in the fourteenth century. But she’s not alone. Competing for the historic prize–and desperate for the crucial information Stephanie possesses–is Raymond de Roquefort, a shadowy zealot with an army of assassins at his command.

At the end of a lethal game of conquest, rife with intrigue, treachery, and craven lust for power, lies a shattering discovery that could rock the civilized world–and, in the wrong hands, bring it to its knees.

Someone, on some thread somewhere, mentioned really liking Edgar Allan Poe stories.

I don't remember, then, if it was on this Audiobooks thread. And, in point of fact, I don't think that the audio alone of the following can be directly downloaded (there are third party software programs that can do it).

Anyway, Open Culture has collected and posted famous Edgar Allan Poe stories, read by Iggy Pop, Jeff Buckley, Christopher Walken, Marianne Faithful, and more. Here's the linky, linky (I did that because Poe liked to repeat words, words in his stories, stories. ).

The stories are "dramaticized," and while I'm not against dramaticizations per se, I'm not sure that I care for their particular dramatizations. Ymmv.

The tangled lives of three generations evoke a vanished world in this, the first volume of the Cazalet Chronicle.

Home Place, Sussex, 1937. The English family at home.... For two unforgettable summers, they gathered together, safe from the advancing storm clouds of war. In the heart of the Sussex countryside, these were still sunlit days of childish games, lavish family meals, and picnics on the beach.

Three generations of the Cazalet family played out their lives - with their relatives, their children and their servants - and the fascinating triangle of their affairs....

A word of caution concerning Audiobooks.com - backups!

Be sure and backup all of your audiobooks to one or more devices - computer, cloud, SD card, USB stick, hard drive, etc. Audiobooks.com has removed books from customers' accounts. I lost two books from my account; luckily I had them backed up.

This warning also applies to all audiobooks you purchase. Don't trust the company to keep your only copies in their cloud. It's a good way to lose books.

Good advice. If Audiobooks.com no longer sell a title then you lose it from your library. They are the only company I know that does this.

That sucks. Thanks for the heads up, fellows. I'll download my purchases ASAP.

Thanks very much for the information!

As soon as I finish this post, you can bet your sweet patootie that I'm going over to audiobooks.com and backup my one purchase (so far, and it may be for all time with this cockamamie policy in place).

I'm still incensed about losing the ability to download Barnes & Noble's Nook Books that I purchased.

I know what the legal experts in the MobileRead audience are thinking and maybe were planning to say. Save it. I know that legally I don't own the books or audiobooks, as I would a physical book or audiobook. I own the license. A license, not the actual product! Who is the idiot who came up with that?

I had better quit. I'm losing my temper.

I am one of the 1% of people in the world who does not own a functioning Android or iOS device. I say functioning, because I can't get it to recognize 32 GB that I installed on it (in the form of a memory card) so that I can download more than just a few, most important apps (the phone came with only 4 GB on board).

Well, it looks like the only devices that you can download Audiobooks.com audiobooks to are--guess what?--an Android or iOS device.

Unlike their policy of deleting a book from your library if they quit selling it, where Audiobooks apparently stands alone, there is one other company that sells audiobooks that I know of which allows you to use only an Android or iOS device. That is Nook audio. I did not notice (and I don't think that there was anything said about it beforehand; if there was, I couldn't find it.) before I purchased one of their audiobooks that that was the case. (And, on top of that, it was not the easiest process in the world being able to return it to them and get my money back, after I found out.)

Caveat emptor.

I mainly buy from Audible but i immediately download all audiobook purchases into itunes and save a separate copy to my external hard drives (i have multiple). I also load the itunes download onto my Android tablet. I'm a little paranoid about backing up my audiobooks.
