I don't know about my Fire 6...My daughter uses it, so I don't want to test things too much because she'd kill me if I screwed things up on her device, but I'll have a look next week end and will send you a PM if you want.
Thank you for the offer. I could test that myself by unregistering one of my Fires and seeing if I can access the system without an account so please don't go to any trouble on my behalf.

I am going to only shop with Amazon for ebooks going forward to at least keep my account open. I may well sell at least the two HDXs I haven't decided yet, especially as we will probably not renew Prime next year.

My emotions right now are too unstable to make proper decisions. We did write to Jeff on Tuesday on a read receipt but so far it appears no one has opened our email.

Amazon have stated that closed accounts still retain all access to digital purchases.

Josie, your account has not been closed, so there's no reason for you not to open a second account, say in your husband's name. I think many couples have separate Amazon accounts. Do not link your new account with your primary account in any way - not Audible, Prime sharing, anything!

Suspend all new purchases on your existing account. You said that most of your purchases are from third parties anyway, well no third party sells anything exclusive on Amazon. These items are easily available from eBay or even from Ali Express, the source of most third party items.

If there's something you really want from Amazon, purchase it using your husband's account. Without Prime, you may have to pay a few pounds in shipping, but at least your primary account will be safe. But still be wary about returns on your husband's account.

Amazon have stated that that is their policy.

"Account status should not affect any customer's ability to access their library.

If any customer has trouble accessing their content, he or she should contact customer service for help"

I haven't found a reliable account of an account closure leading to loss of Kindle access since the 2012 case when Amazon fixed things for the person in question and stated this policy.

TracFone failed to disclose or adequately disclose its practice of enforcing fixed limits on the amount of mobile data service its customers could use in a thirty-day service period. In fact, until at least September 2013, TracFone did not state in most of its advertising or terms and conditions that it would suspend or throttle its customers’ mobile data service if they used more than a fixed amount of mobile data in a thirty-day service period. In September 2013, TracFone began to include this information for all of its “unlimited” offerings, but often has tucked it away in small print.

Thanks Purple Lady.

Hey Josieb1,
Here is an easy way to save your digital stuff.
Download all the digital stuff to your kindles.
Do NOT unregister as it does take everything off the fires.
Once you are finished downloading, turn off the wifi and 3g if you have that.
Never turn the wifi back on. You have your digital content and don't have to worry about it disappearing.
Then since Amazon has upset you so much, never darken their website again.

There are other places to get ebook files that can be sideloaded on a kindle.

In the UK buying online and buying in store in person are two very different things, and the return rates between the two will consequently be very different. By law, Amazon and any other online retailer have to accept returns and give you a refund if you don't want the item for any reason within 14 days of ordering it (and you then have 14 days to return it).

So it'd then be very questionable of them to warn you about returning too many items, unless it was a ridiculously high amount - which it doesn't really seem to be in this instance. 15% (not 25%) of just over 100 orders? Although it may be the case that some items were returned outwith this period, as Amazon do offer far better customer service than most retailers and they will accept returns for far longer period. They aren't the only ones though, if an item is in unused and you have the original receipt, some retailers (John Lewis for example) will accept returns and refund you the money even if you bought in store and not online.

As pointed out already in this thread, Amazon can of course choose not to encourage you to do business with them, but they've already turned the customer off buying from them anyway. And to someone like me as a fairly neutral observer, it does call into question their previously high level of customer support. Though I have to say I've never had any problem with Amazon, and they have even refunded me for a couple of digital items I wasn't happy with, despite them not needing to do that.

Not one email has been reassuring in that regard because ALL the emails are standard inhuman replies. I can't speak to anyone. I can't engage with them in any reasonable way therefore I CANNOT behave as a normal customer.

I DON'T CARE about future purchases, not from Amazon (I do from Audible who is owned by Amazon) I care about my existing digital purchases, which according to the laws in most countries I don't own. So I have no rights here.

The law in European union is very strict. You can return any [physical] item purchased in an Internet store within 14 days for a full refund.
There is no law, however, forcing them to sell you more things if they decide they do not want you to be their customer.

Warning you in advance is a fair thing.
Would you prefer to receive a letter / email stating that "You have returned too many items and you can no longer be our customer. There is nothing you can do to become our customer ever again. Period!"

Funny thing... as I'm reading this thread I just got a call that my $90 PrimePantry delivery was made, but one of the detergent bottles leaked and ruined all of the food items...

...I guess I'll be making a rather substantial 'return' and pushing my return rate closer to the 1% mark.

I've always been hesitant to buy detergents and food in the same order, and now my fear has been vindicated.

I guess I need to know exactly what happens when Amazon "closes" your account.
