Highly Rated Book Responding to the Arguments of Bart Ehrman and Others. 80% M/D!
(80% of the digital list price).
This book seems to be mainly a response to the writings of Bart Ehrman (How Jesus Became God, Misquoting Jesus, et al.). Ehrman, a professor of New Testament (if memory serves me correctly) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is a self-described "agnostic with atheist leanings," but at one time was a believer, and even studied in seminary for some time. Ehrman's books (most of them, at least) have been popular, and they perfunctorily land on the New York Times bestseller lists. Truth in a Culture of Doubt: Engaging Skeptical Challenges to the Bible. By Andreas J. Kostenberger; Darrell Bock & 1 more. Rated 4.8 stars, but from only 10 reviews at Amazon at the present moment; rated 4.38, from 21 ratings at GoodReads. Print list price $19.99; digital list price $14.99; Kindle price now $2.99. B&H Academic, publisher. 211 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Truth-Culture-...s+to+the+Bible. Book Description All too often Christians, and even Christian leaders, don’t know how to deal with skeptical challenges of the Bible and the Christian faith. Few churches address the historical questions about the Bible and the theological questions concerning the God who, believers claim, has inspired the Bible. Too often Christian scholarship has been kept at arm’s length and even viewed with suspicion by the church. Speaking and writing in this kind of environment, Bart Ehrman—professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and author of four New York Times bestsellers—has found a captive audience. Ehrman’s popularity is due in large part to the fact that he is talking about things most people never learned about in church. Some have long given up on Christianity, and Ehrman is only reinforcing their decision to depart from their Christian upbringing. Others are trying to reconcile their faith with rational arguments and find Ehrman’s books both interesting and disturbing if not appealing. Truth in a Culture of Doubt takes a closer look at the key arguments skeptical scholars such as Ehrman keep repeating in radio interviews, debates, and in his their popular writings. If you are looking for insightful responses to critical arguments from a biblical perspective, easily accessible and thoughtfully presented, this book is for you. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive response to Ehrman’s popular works. It is presented in such a way that readers can either read straight through the book or use it as a reference when particular questions arise. Responding to skeptical scholars such as Ehrman, Truth in a Culture of Doubt takes readers on a journey to explain topics such as the Bible’s origins, the copying of the Bible, alleged contradictions in Scripture, and the relationship between God and evil. Written for all serious students of Scripture, this book will enable you to know how to respond to a wide variety of critical arguments raised against the reliability of Scripture and the truthfulness of Christianity. |

50 Baker Books for $50!
Vyrso is offering a bundle of 50 Baker ebooks for only $50. The deal is good through August 17.
The titles are on "theology, spiritual growth, family and marriage, ministry, and other important Christian topics." Vyrso is a subsidiary, offshoot, or in some other way affiliated with Logos, the big Bible study software company. Vyrso's books, however, run on their own proprietary app. They state that you can read the books "on any mobile device." The regular (i.e., list, I assume) price of all of these books is $724.61, so you realize a savings of $674.62, according to Vyrso. As with all bundled book deals, however, there are some books that you probably would like to have, several that you're indifferent about or unsure of, and some that you know that you would not be interested in. So, in reality, you may still be paying several dollars per book for the ones that you want. And, keep in mind that none of us are going to pay list price for ebooks that we buy, thanks to Amazon and other ebook discounters, so the difference in price that we would pay for the books that we want in a bundle and the price that we would pay outright for them might not be all that great. Go to this webpage to find out all of the titles, to get other information, and to download the app. BTW--Vyrso frequently has promotions in which they offer sharply reduced prices on ebooks that other companies do not have similarly discounted. If you don't mind using their proprietary app to read the ebooks, you might find it advantageous to sign up for an account and/or get on their mailing list. I think that all of the DCC free offerings are also available as Kindle mobis, too. That's the format that I get them in. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 08-03-2015 at 08:30 PM. |

You can open Vyrso books also in the main Logos program, which in turn allows you to connect your account to one Kindle email address and many of the books (not all) can from there be sent to your Kindle email address. You can then also download the Kindle file from your Amazon Cloud Drive under My Send-to-Kindle Docs.

I've used Logos probably 20 years. Heretofore I've only used it on a laptop or desktop. I was under the impression that Vyrso ebooks could be opened only in their proprietary app and, until yesterday, thought that you had to have a smartphone or tablet to do that (I don't have either--I'm trying to be the world's last holdout to buy a smartphone. There might be a prize or something for that. haha). I'm glad to know that I can open them in Logos. Maybe you'll find this funny. I have actually bought several Vyrso ebooks, that had really good markdown prices, in the past, assuming that one day I'd have a smartphone or tablet and be able to use the books then. ha Logos and WordSearchBible (another Bible study program that I use) are major platforms for me for use of digital books, especially as you might suspect, for studying. I haven't seen a thread anywhere on Mobileread where members can discuss matters related to them. I've thought several times that it might be nice to have one; of course it would depend upon whether or not there are more than a handful of Mobilereaders who are Bible study software users. |

The Gospels and Acts volume of the Holman Apologetics Commentary on the Bible series is $2.99. As far as I can tell, though, this is the only book in the "series".
I put an eReaderiQ watch on the book when I saw it listed in the bibliography of another book that I was reading, but for the life of me I can't remember which one ![]() Christianbook B&N Amazon |

My biggest problem with Logos is that there's no Alf plugin or equivalent, so I haven't bought anything from them recently. They were around before ebooks were really a thing, though, and I have a reasonably large library with them. I was pleasantly surprised when I installed the Android app that most of my previous purchases (from years ago, like yours) were available to it. Quote:

I would pay attention (as long as I noticed it start up). I only use OliveTree software (and that, too infrequently), and that's not Kindle software but iPad software. But it has better verse finding, making it easier to find a reference. A Kindle Bible is really only good for reading a book straight through, not for following during a sermon.

Great Price ($2.99), from a Nice Markdown (63%), on this Topical Bible from B&H.
This book is primarily a topical "bible" (the book description refers to it as a "topical concordance." That's a new one to me. But whatever.) A topical bible lists places in the Bible where a particular subject is mentioned. This is a very helpful tool in Bible study.
You may say, "I have a concordance [a concordance lists places in the Bible where particular words occur], so why do I need a topical bible?" Well, a concordance can be used to help you find where subjects are mentioned. However, there are at least two drawbacks to using a concordance for this. For one, using a concordance usually necessitates that you search several for different key words that could be associated with a subject. So, it's more time-consuming (not only for this, but also for other reasons.) Second, you may fail to find a lot of passages in the Bible, because many times a subject can be mentioned without using any of the key words. So, a search leaves you with incomplete results. Perhaps you see, then, the advantages of a topical bible. So That's in the Bible? By John Perry. Rated 4.0 stars, but from only 10 reviews at Amazon; rated 4.17, but from only 6 ratings, at GoodReads. Print list price $14.99; digital list price $7.99; Kindle price now $2.99. B&H Publishing Group, publisher. 600 pages. http://www.amazon.com/So-Thats-Bible...s+in+the+bible. Book Description Throw out all your preconceived notions of what a topical concordance should be. This new book picks up where other subject indexes leave off, with thousands of listings on 3,700 topics, including references on contemporary issues such as abortion, rap music, capital punishment, and AIDS. Also included are more than 200 short articles about people in the Bible, daily life in ancient times, weights and measures, and other special information that adds sparkle to sermons, lessons, and group discussions. This book is a 'must have' for every Bible reference shelf. Particularly valuable for ministers, home schoolers, parents, and teachers. -- Thousands of traditional and contemporary topics -- Special sections including 'Bible Bios', 'Daily Life', 'Now You Know' and more -- For use with KJV, NIV, NKJV, CEV, LB, and NRSV Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 08-06-2015 at 03:15 AM. |

A Couple of Books on Apologetics with High Ratings and Big Markdowns.
I'm running across more apologetics books than I used to. Perhaps more are being published and/or marked down more in response to the rapidly and radically changing religious landscape in the U.S.
Anyway, the following are two apologetics books that have some of the better combinations of high ratings and low price that I have come across in the last few days. The Ultimate Proof of Creation. By Jason Lisle. Rated 4.2, from 121 reviews at the present moment at Amazon. Print list price $13.99; regular(?) digital price $8.49; Kindle price now $2.99. Master Books, publisher. 256 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Proof...of+of+Creation. Book Description It’s a bold title: “The Ultimate Proof of Creation.” But is there such a thing? There are many books that contain seemingly powerful arguments for biblical creation. But is there an ultimate proof of creation? There is an argument for creation that is powerful, conclusive, and has no true rebuttal. As such, it is an irrefutable argument – an “ultimate proof ” of the Christian worldview biblical creation. Master the method outlined in the following chapters, and you will be able to defend Christianity against all opposition. * Learn how to apply the ultimate proof in dialogues with evolutionists, how to spot logical fallacies, and biblical examples of defending the faith * Discover the nature of scientific evidence and its proper role in the origins debate * Details how to address theistic evolution, “day age” creationism, and other compromised positions of biblical creationism * An exceptional book for pastors, ministry leaders, seminary attendees, and students of religion and philosophy This book is a complete guide to defending the Christian faith, emphasizing the defense of the Genesis account of creation, built on techniques that have been developed over many years and presentations. They are not difficult to apply when you learn how to do it properly. Ready to move beyond the circular arguments? It is time to get to the real heart of the issue and rationally resolve the origins debate. It is time to discover The Ultimate Proof of Creation. - Why People Don't Believe: Confronting Seven Challenges to Christian Faith. By Paul Chamberlain. Rated 4.6 stars, but from only 7 reviews, at the present moment, at Amazon; rated 3.57, from 23 ratings at GoodReads. Print list price N/A; digital list price $15.00; Kindle price now $0.99. Baker Books, publisher. 176 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Why-People-Don...hristian+Faith. Book Description What good is religion? Religious faith is increasingly seen as dangerous and violent. The litany of allegations being brought against religion includes that it is the cause of intolerance, imperialism, irrationality, bigotry, and war, to name a few. How are Christians to respond? In Why People Don't Believe, Paul Chamberlain honestly represents the challenges raised against religious faith and Christianity in particular. He deftly responds to these criticisms, evaluating whether they have merit, and outlines the many positive contributions Christianity has made to the world over the past two thousand years. If you are troubled by today's headlines involving religious violence or if you're at a loss when it comes to responding to critics, you will find Why People Don't Believe a helpful and hopeful book. |

It's interesting (and maybe one day it will be helpful) to know about OliveTree's strength. Logos' strength is in the fact that there is an enormous amount of books available on that platform--far more than for any other Bible software company. Their platform is really the de facto publishing standard now for religious books in a Bible study software. People who are deeply into language studies and exegesis would use yet one of several other programs--Hermeutica (sp?) is one that quickly comes to mind. I currently use the same kind of book that I always have (paper, hard copy) to look up passages in church. Maybe I'll change one of these days. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 08-07-2015 at 04:20 PM. |

95% Off the #1 Best Seller at Amazon in Christian Counseling and Recovery. 99 Cents!
95% off of the digital list price or the print list price (they both have the same retail price of $17.99), however you slice it.
My posting of this book does not necessarily indicate my agreement with any doctrinal positions taken in the book. Mindscape: What to Think About Instead of Worrying. By Timothy Z. Witmer. Rated 4.6 stars, but from only 8 reviews at Amazon, at the present moment; rated 3.57, from 14 reviews at GoodReads. Print list price of $17.99; digital list price $17.99; Kindle price now $0.99. New Growth Press, publisher. 120 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Mindscape-Thin...ndscape+witmer. I happen to know that this book is also available at Christianbook (there it will be in the ePub format, DRM Free). Book Description “No Worries?” We lob the phrase at others, but lie awake at night ourselves. Ebola, the economy, our kids, our parents, our future. We struggle to pull our thoughts away from our worries, fears, and frustrations. When we get stuck, it's not exactly easy to fixate on “whatever is true, noble, right and pure.” We are profoundly aware that our worries have negative consequences for our bodies, minds, and relationships. But like most real people with real problems, our thoughts keep swirling around the same old issues. Mindscape builds a practical action plan for changing your mental landscape—and your life—based on Paul’s rich exhortation in Philippians 4:8. Author Tim Witmer draws from thirty years of experience in helping worried people apply Scripture to their lives to present a clear, biblical, and deeply pastoral guide to replacing worry with a new way of thinking. Mindscape is not a self-help book or an academic tome on behavioral theory. It is a real-world guide to the transformation that Jesus works in us as we go to him in faith and ask for his power to change, to listen, and to think differently. Chapter-by-chapter application questions make Mindscape perfect for personal reflection or small group use. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 08-10-2015 at 11:22 PM. |
