Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Quiet Assassin by Thomas Kirkwood, an old school Cold War political/espionage thriller with strong romantic elements set in 60s-era East German Berlin, originally out from Dutton in 1985. This was apparently a Book Club of the Month selection and quotes a lot of newspaper blurb praise.

Here is a truly original thriller, comparable to the very best of vintage Le Carré. It is set behind the Berlin Wall in the heart of the East German police state and it features one of the most unique and winning heroines since Lucy in Ken Follett's Eye of the Needle. Her name is Käte Frassek, a resistance fighter since the age of eighteen, who over the course of twenty years leads a double life in her courageous campaign to rouse her countrymen to revolt against their repressive regime. She is a wife, a mother, a scientist, a lover... and an assassin.

Against a backdrop of the Cold War in the 1960s, an abiding love develops between Käte, while still the young wife of an East German official, and an American physician innocent of who she is and what she is doing. In the remarkable climax to her years of plotting against the head of the State's secret police, she finally must risk not only her own life but her son's and lover's as well.

Bargain @ $2.99 for Canada only, as far as I can tell (the UK has the same edition but is not on sale, and this doesn't seem to be out in the US/author is signed up with a different publisher for this series?), from HarperCollins, available in multiple stores (not couponable) @ Kobo (this is their current Deal of the Day), Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, etc.

The Lost Boy by Swedish author Camilla Läckberg (SYKM, Wikipedia), the recently published 7th in her Hedström & Falck series of crime novels pairing a detective and a writer in the small fishing town of Fjällbacka, which apparently also happens to be the author's own hometown, according to her Wikipedia entry.

The rest of the novels in the series are priced at $11.99 each and the money-saving omnibus editions only go from #1-3 and #4-6 thus far, so this seems to be a really good deal, if you're interested in Nordic fiction.

(ETA: Omnibus #1-3 seems to be at a relatively good discount-ish price of $15.99 CAD right now in multiple venues, sample linkage @ Kobo for Camilla Lackberg Crime Thrillers 1-3: The Ice Princess, The Preacher, The Stonecutter, which works out to ~$5.33 per book before taxes, in comparison to the $12 CAD HC charges for the individuals, and the $27 price point for Omnibus #4-6)

No. 1 international bestseller and Swedish crime sensation Camilla Lackberg’s new psychological thriller – irresistible for fans of Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo.

Mats Sverin was Fjallbacka’s financial director on a regeneration project worth millions. When he is found murdered, Detective Patrik Hedstrom must find answers. It seems Mats was a man who everybody liked yet nobody really knew – a man with something to hide… Is it just a coincidence that his high school sweetheart, Nathalie, has returned to the area? What does she know about who Mats really was?

However, Nathalie has her own secret. Something has made her and her five-year-old son flee to their remote family home on the ‘Ghost Isle’. And that is where she’ll stay and shield her son from the evils of the world. But, as the murder investigation draws a blank, the police have to dig deeper – and before long, everyone’s lives will be dragged into the light …

There are a bunch more Endeavour Press books on sale in the US Kindle Countdown section. Endeavour Press seems to have made a thing of putting a bunch of backlist titles on US Kindle Countdown recently. Most of these authors have had other books on countdown recently. Here are some I found just now:

The Secret Houses by John Gardner, $0.99 for about 3 1/2 more days, then goes to $3.99
link: http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Houses-...dp/B00LJB84PC/
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
John Gardner's The Secret Generations was acclaimed as one of the classic works of Cold War espionage fiction.

The Secret Houses is its explosive sequel.

Two families - the Railtons in Britain and the Farthings in America - are at the heart of a titanic political struggle, their fates intertwined in the secret world of Intelligence by blood, love, loyalty and betrayal.

The British Secret Intelligence Service and the American Office of Strategic Services are locked in a desperate struggle to destroy the war machine that threatens the future of the world - and once again the Railtons and the Farthings are drawn into the secret struggle.

Both families are intimately concerned in the fate of the Tarot resistance network, operated by Caspar Railton under the nose of the ruthless SS officer Hans-Dieter Klaubert, known as the Devil of Orléans. Caspar has recruited his nieces Caroline and Jo-Jo as undercover agents in France, and their disappearance coincided with the break-up of Tarot.

The truth about Tarot and the fate of Caroline and Jo-Jo is at the heart of this enthralling installment of an Intelligence saga that has been hailed on both sides of the Atlantic as a classic of espionage fiction.

‘Faultless construction and a good deal of narrative pace combine to make this a thoroughly enjoyable read’ – Books

‘A complex but sophisticated and rewarding sequel to The Secret Generations… a third Railton/Farthing saga seems assured and is welcome’ – Kirkus Reviews

‘An exciting spy story’ – Yorkshire Post

‘The suspense is well-portrayed both in the accounts of World War II and in the subsequent cold-war exploits’ – Booklist

Before coming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including Maestro, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including Licence Renewed and Icebreaker. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

Amber Nine by John Gardner is $0.99 for about 4 1/2 more days, then goes up to $3.99
link: http://www.amazon.com/Amber-Nine-Joh.../dp/B00LFXXJUE
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Just when Boysie Oakes thinks he is out of the liquidating business, he finds himself on the sunny shores of Lake Maggiore. His task? To make sure that a Member of Parliament breathes his last breath.

But a straightforward mission start to go awry when his mark turns up dead without Boysie lifting a finger.

Who killed him? And why?

It is only when he is introduced to a sadistic finishing school, run by the mysterious and dangerous Doctor Klara Thirel, that the mystery starts to unravel.

Surrounded by troubled girls galore, including a certain Petronella Witching, Boysie is pulled into the biggest espionage foul-up of the century.

With the help of Petronella, as well as a handful of self-important, and at times incompetent secret agents, Boysie dives into the mysteries behind the dead Member of Parliament, the sexually charged finishing school, and – most of all – who and what is behind the top-secret Amber Nine.

Amber Nine’ is the third in the series of highly acclaimed comic novels featuring the cowardly secret agent, Boysie Oakes. It is perfect for fans of classic British spy fiction, including Ian Fleming, Len Deighton, and Desmond Bagley.

Body Politic by JM Gregson is $0.99 for about 4 1/2 more days and then goes up to $3.99

blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
When the ambitious MP Raymond Keane is found dead in a frozen lake, Superintendent Lambert and Sergeant Hook soon discover that the politician was adept at making enemies.

Plenty of people wanted him dead.

There is his former lover, Moira Yates, whose life he has ruined; his business partner Chris Sampson; Joe Walsh, a disgruntled constituent; and his supposed fiancée, Zoe Renwick, who had been on the point of breaking off their engagement.

Moira Yates seems to have the perfect alibi. Since her break-up with Keane, she has been afflicted with agoraphobia, and is unable to set foot outside her house.

In fact, all the suspects have alibis, but, one by one, they are challenged by the dogged police work of the two detectives.

And when Lambert finds an object by the lake he is sure he has his murderer in his grasp...

But the 'Body Politic' has surprises in store he could not have imagined.

'Body Politic' is a chilling mystery story set in a world of high politics and low crime. It is perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

Praise for J M Gregson:

‘Begins with quiet observation before pouncing to murderous effect’ - Sunday Express

‘A chilling story that never flags from start to finish’ - Bolton Evening News

James Michael Gregson taught for twenty-seven years in schools, colleges and universities before concentrating on full-time writing. He has written books on subjects as diverse as golf and Shakespeare.

The lurid news of ‘The Sacristan’ had plagued the headlines for months.

Victims' bodies were deposited in quiet churches or graveyards.

When the body of a beautiful young woman is found in Hereford Cathedral, it appears he has struck again.

Appointed to the case, DSI Lambert and DS Hook soon come to realise however that nothing about this case — or indeed its victim — is as straightforward as it first appears…

Delving into the history of the victim - Tamsin Rennie - they discover a number of sinister characters, each with their own dark motives.

But what’s more disturbing is that this murder bears little resemblance to The Sacristan Murders.

They suspect that a resourceful new killer is within their midst.

With little known about this new assailant, and a number of potential suspects, Lambert and Hook have to solve one of the most puzzling cases they have ever encountered.

'An Unsuitable Death' is a gripping crime thriller that promises to surprise readers at every turn.

PRAISE FOR J.M.GREGSON:

"Stylishly written and suspenseful" - Booklist

"A fine police procedural boasting brisk pace, vividly drawn characters. Peach is as distinctive as Inspector Morse but less brooding" - Booklist

"Lambert and Hook are perfectly likeable and the series is recommended for its gritty realism and hard-to-solve mysteries" - Booklist

J M GREGSON has written books on subjects as diverse as golf and Shakespeare, and is much in demand as a lecturer and public speaker. Other titles by J. M. Gregson include 'Girl Gone Missing', 'Making a Killing' and 'Dead on Course'.

blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Amid the luxurious surroundings of the Wye Castle Hotel and Country Club, a man is found dead on the golf course.

Superintendent Lambert and Sergeant Hook establish fairly quickly how he died.

But discovering who killed him proves a far more difficult challenge.

The golf course and hotel are set in spectacular scenery beside one of England's most beautiful rivers, with Hereford's ancient Cathedral visible in the distance.

In May this incomparable valley is at its best, yet it is a bizarre setting for the investigation of a brutal murder.

Gradually, over the days of their stay, Lambert unearths the secrets of the group who surrounded the dead man.

The investigation becomes ever more urgent, for even as the suspects play golf and enjoy good food and wine, there is more violence threatened within the ivy-clad walls of the old hotel…

Dead on Course’ is a chilling, expertly-plotted mystery story. It is perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

Blackstone and the Burning Secret by Sally Spencer is $0.99 for about 3 1/2 more days, before going up to $3.99.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Blackstone-Bur.../dp/B00ODE4GHM
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Inspector Sam Blackstone has dealt with arsonists before — but never one quite like this.

If the arsonist’s true purpose is to make the government hand over one hundred thousand pounds, why does he seem so reluctant to apply the necessary pressure?

Why does he content himself with burning down a single warehouse, when he could set an entire riverside wharf ablaze?

And why firebomb a single sloop, when it would have been just as easy to destroy the whole fleet?

In order to answer these questions, Blackstone—aided by Dr Ellie Carr, a passionate disciple of the new science of criminal pathology—must follow a trail of death and destruction.

That trail will lead them to the very centre of government itself.

And, not for the first time, Blackstone soon realises that in solving this case, he may well be destroying his own career.

Blackstone and the Burning Secret is a brilliantly plotted historical mystery from a master of the genre.

I read Amber Nine back when I was in college, circa 1970. I enjoyed it to some extent, so I'll gladly pay 99 cents to read it again.

this romantic adventure moves at breakneck speed through a land of crime, love and deception. The kidnapping of beautiful French actress, Chantal Armand, forms the hub of a wheel around which art and science, sacrifice and arrogance, love and hate spin at a dizzying pace.

Thanks! The other one has been free before (and self-pub, IIRC), but TSP is a new backlist offering (originally Macmillan 1981) which I'm pleased to see him add, as I do like things set in the Nordic regions.

That's a really nice edition (Jardine actually rewrote the entire novel for the Author's Cut and gave an extensive foreword explaining why), which I picked up when it was a Canadian freebie during the summer.

Also free @ B&N UK & Kobo UK. Likely also iTunes UK & Google Play UK, but they're under a slightly different version from the Canadian store so I can't easily pull up the links, sorry.

ETA: switched into the other user account to check something, and pulled up the iTunes UK link for this, where it is indeed also free.

blurb:
Spoiler:

And when Geoff is killed in the very same building, it seems Mallin has given Kyle a firm alibi.

Soon Geoff's wife Elsa is under threat as well.

And Mallin himself may be implicated.

Mallin must fight to prove his innocence and to find the real killer in this atmospheric crime thriller, which is perfect for fans of Peter James and Peter Robinson.

He lived in Wolverhampton and amongst other things worked as a civil servant and as a Social Security inspector – backgrounds which he made full use of in his fiction.

blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
New York.

One hundred kilos of pure heroin has gone missing from police evidence stores.

Word on the street: this was an inside job.

But who took it?

And why?

With time running out and a whole police force of suspects, Detective Clara O'Shea and her team at Operation Rebound must turn to Dante Falconieri for help.

In this game of cat and mouse, there are no rules -- and everyone's a suspect.

And Falconieri soon finds his own life is on the line.

Island in Waiting by Anthea Fraser is $0.99, down from $3.99
link: http://www.amazon.com/Island-Waiting.../dp/B00OB8AM6O
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Chloe Winter has always been the black sheep in her high achieving family.

And once more she finds herself running from her problems, this time to stay with her brother, Hugo, on the Isle of Man.

While at the airport she finds herself irresistibly drawn to a stranger. He seems strongly familiar, and yet she knows they have never met before.

When she reaches the island, her sense of deja-vu intensifies. Her parents told her she has never been here before, but she is sure she has.

Chloe has long been haunted by ‘special’ dreams.

At the age of sixteen she volunteered to go up on stage during a hypnotist act, but after putting her under, he couldn’t revive her, and she remained in a coma for three days.

Since then her dreams have been getting more and more vivid.

And after arriving on the island, she realises they are starting to come true…

As she learns more about the ancient Norse legends associated with the island, Chloe feels herself being drawn into the mystical prehistoric forces.

And when Hugo introduces Chloe to Ray Ketteringham, the local art master, things start to get even stranger.

She feels instantly hypnotised by him, and he seems to feel the same way…

As her dreams start to get darker, things take a sinister turn.

Has Chloe met Ray before?

And can she control her dreams?

Or will her connection to the mysterious island end up destroying her…?

'Sympathetic, well-executed book, in which full attention is paid to human feelings and failings' - Yorkshire Post

She wrote short stories before turning to novels of the supernatural, and then to crime. Her novels include ‘The Seven Stars’, ‘The Ten Commandments’, ‘Death Speaks Softly’ and ‘Pretty Maids All in a Row’.

Laura Possessed by Anthea Fraser is $0.99, down from $3.99
link: http://www.amazon.com/Laura-Possesse.../dp/B00NWC206A
blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
Laura Hardy is recovering from a traumatic car crash.

The incident proves fatal for her mother, and whilst Laura’s life was spared, she is left injured, weak and grieving for her loss.

Taken into her brother’s care, Edward Hardy resolves that accommodating Laura at his family home, Four Winds, will provide the respite Laura so desperately needs.

Upon arrival however, Laura senses a dark and pervading undercurrent of unrest at Four Winds.

What is strange is that it both draws and repels her…

As Laura tries to settle into her new home, she becomes increasingly unsettled by the strange occurrences she encounters at Four Winds.

The twisted trees at the bottom of the garden behind her brother's house and the little boy stood at her bedroom door, neither of which can be accounted for.

And then the dream: the handsome dark-haired man bending over her, kissing her passionately—the very man who stood before her now at the cocktail party, casually sipping a drink.

She knew his face as well as her own, but had never seen him before…

Four Winds’ hides a secret, a secret that Laura cannot escape, but which is pulling her deeper and deeper into its clutches…

'Laura Possessed' is an expertly plotted crime novel that will keep readers gripped from the first page to the last.

Free from the author('s republishing consortium) via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Death Will Get You Sober by Agatha & Derringer Award-nominee Elizabeth Zelvin (SYKM), 1st in her Bruce Kohler mystery series set in New York, starring the eponymous recovering alcoholic, originally out from Minotaur in 2008.

SOBRIETY’S NOT FOR SISSIES. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PHRASE “DEAD DRUNK” BECOMES LITERAL.

On Christmas Day, Bruce Kohler wakes up in detox on the Bowery in New York City. He realizes it’s time to change his life, but how can he stay sober without dying of boredom? Then homeless alcoholics begin to turn up dead, and one of these is Bruce’s friend Godfrey, a cynical aristocrat with a trust fund and some secrets.

Two old friends give Bruce a second chance and agree to help him with his investigation: his best friend, Jimmy, a computer genius and history buff who’s been in AA for years, and Jimmy’s girl friend Barbara, a counselor who sometimes crosses the line between helping and codependency.

Pretty soon, the suspects are piling up. Along with the laughs. But, witty as she is, Zelvin never loses her compassion for the painful process of recovery.

Fans of Parnell Hall and Tony Dunbar who enjoy a (virgin) cocktail of excellent writing, sly wit, and classic mystery will get a kick out of Bruce’s antics.
