That is perfect! I hate the JWs. There was a "Kingdom Hall" in my old neighborhood. I am a basically polite, not to say passive-aggressive, Southern girl, so I was too nice to them and they kept coming back.

We generally get a visit from them once a year, in the spring. Usually two people traveling together. The last time they were out they had a set presentation that they started as soon as I opened the door: "As we know, when Jesus was on earth he made many miracles. If Jesus was here today, what one miracle would you ask him for?"

Me: "Make you stop coming."

They left.

It works fine if she isn't wearing a holstered .357.

Huh. The JW's around here are inoffensive older women that walk around the neighborhood in pairs. They come to the door, we exchange pleasantries, I tell them I'm happy with my faith as it is, they hand me a tract and we say our goodbyes amicably. Of course, all I have is time. If I were busy I guess it would bother me more. (The trash collection service reps who came to my door and gave me a hard sell about changing services - that's a different story. I ended up yelling and slamming the door. They would not back down! )

AND, just to top off my day, Mr. Hitch was identity-thieved. Some a$$hole is walking around in (just to infuriate me more) bloody BURBERRY!!!!

New phone scam out here. A "general contracting company" representative calls to say he has a note on his desk saying I called because I needed a job done. Of course it's not too hard to determine from publicly available sources that I'm in my 60s (and, therefore, might have a faulty memory) and he lists the services they offer that "I" might have called them about.

This morning's call was the third time it has been tried.

I got several calls in a row that weren't scams, but were bemusing.

A company offering a Wifi-based home security system was expanding into my area, and interested in providing me with one of their systems free as a promotion. All I had to do was agree to a discrete sign on my front lawn announcing the system was installed and advertising who it was from.

I live in Manhattan, NYC, on an upper floor of a multi-unit building with a front desk. I don't have a front lawn to put a sign on, even if I had any use for their product. There are some townhouses in my neighborhood, but they don't have front lawns either. Lawns, if any, are in the back out of public view.

Since they had my number, they had my area code, and it would have been the work of a moment to discover my area was not likely to be a good candidate for what they offered.

After the third call, they seemed to get the hint.

They were perfectly nice and polite, and I was nice in return, but I had to wonder why they thought I might be a prospect.

Similarly, I wonder why company X keeps mailing me insurance rate quotes which are far higher than what I already pay. They are quoting a rate for a regular house (I imagine), while a glance at the address they are mailing to would tell them that there are a lot of townhouse complexes around there, and very few single houses.

It's a bit more understandable in a mail promotion. The last I looked, a 3% hit rate (in the sense of people responding the the mailer and investigating further) was considered good for a direct mail campaign.

In my case, it's credit cards solicitations. We've accumulated a number of cards, and have been slowly pruning back, dropping cards with higher interest rates and cards we simply haven't used. We get continual direct mailers offering us new and different cards, or wanting us to transfer balances, or offering checks we could write against our credit lines. We also get regular notices that our credit limit has been increased on various cards we have. My SO is perturbed by those.

"They just raised our credit!"

"So? We incur charges. We pay them off. We generally pay them faster than is required. We have a high credit score in consequence, and they raise our credit limits. Since we have no intention of actually using those higher credit lines, it doesn't matter."

I just think it a pity we don't have a root cellar we could insulate with the offers that stuff our mailbox.

I used to have a co-worker who actively solicited all of the direct mailing lists
(before email was prevalent) he could find, then used them in his wood burning stove to heat his house.

Years ago (before email and the web), a woman I know was having problems with a guy who wouldn't take no for an answer.

Various of her friends decided he needed a lesson. So they got together one weekend with a stack of newspapers and magazines, looking for coupons and offers of the "Yes! Send me more info!" and "Put me on your mailing list!" variety, filled them out with his name and address, and mailed them in.

My understanding was that he reached the point of getting four postal sacks of junk mail a day, and had to move and leave no forwarding address to escape it.

(Whether he learned anything from it was unclear, but since learning requires intelligence, I doubted it.)
