Finished the Harry Potter books....hadn't read 6 and 7 before. Glad I have, they were good.

Now I am going through Brandon Sanderson's Reckoners series. I enjoyed Steelheart and Firefight. Now halfway through Calamity.

Just finished List of the Lost by Morrissey. As I said in my GR review, this was a very literary read. and needs a lot of focus. I had to reread sentences again and again to get the meaning, but felt it was worth the effort. I read it in a day, and have to say Morrissey is either a genius or a nutcase, and I'm veering towards genius.

Just finished Black Hole by Charles Burns, a very strange and hallucinogenic 368 page graphic novel. A not too shoddy tale of shoddy outsider teenagers and the unpleasant physical mutations they suffer as a result of a strange, sexually transmitted virus. This one might make it to the big screen. Some web sites are claiming that Neil Gaiman is writing the screenplay.

Just started Wesley Chu's The Lives of Tao. A spy vs spy type thriller with ancient aliens, humor, and an immense, world-spanning secret war thrown in for good measure. What's not to love?

It's book one of a completed trilogy, by the way.

Finished The Gold Seekers and The Gallant by William Stuart Long (Vivian Stuart). Both great books. I highly recommend these historical fiction novels. Both have villians you get to hate throughout the book. After a couple of lackluster cozies, I have moved on to The Orient Express by Agatha Christie and will spend the last 2 days of the month reading Asimov's and Lightspeed magazines. I'm so behind on those!

Ha! You beat me to the post.

I liked it, too. I especially liked the way the author made it a non-religious conflict -- no holy water or crosses.

Right now things have busied up, again, so I'm planning on reading some short stories.

Heh... some of those asterisks tripped me up, particularly the "***" ones. Took me a while to figure a couple of them out.

About a third of the way through the Ellen DeGeneres book; not very compelling, so I may switch out and read that sequel.

Though I've been eyeballing this hacking bundle over at Humble...

I finished Chains of Command by Marko Kloos yesterday, the brand-new 4th book in his Frontlines mil-SF series, published by Amazon's 47North imprint. I enjoyed it. I don't think I found it quite as gripping as some of the earlier installments - I seem to have taken about a week to read it, which is longer than the previous books - but I thought the story was better than book 3, and I can now see how the series might go forward.

Next up I'm thinking Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane, the second Young Wizards book. Should be a quick light read.

I just finished the first of the series yesterday, having discovered it on Kindle Unlimited. It reminded me a bit of one of Charles Sheffield's juveniles, with a lot of David Weber (lots of battles) thrown in. I did enjoy it enough to download the second one.

Just finished Bachelors Get Lonely (1961) by [I]Erle Stanley Gardner. For the first time, Donald is offered by Bertha to spend his time as he would wish.

‘Just what you’re supposed to be doing as a gentleman of leisure,’ Bertha said, ‘going to the races and the ball games…. Dammit, it makes me mad to think of me slaving here in the office while you’re getting your expenses paid going around to ball games, horse races, cocktail lounges and high-class restaurants.’

‘Expenses come high,’ Donald said, ‘going to horse races, ball games, taking dames out to—’

But the case turns into two incidents involving a Peeping Tom in a Motel. Bertha, who has warned Donald to steer clear of the dangerous jobs and stick to aiding solid, sane citizens like Carson. And all Carson wants is the name of the informer in his office who is passing on confidential material to a business rival. When the rival is murdered at the Motel, it looks as though Bertha has picked the wrong client....

Just finished "The Silver Crown", by Joel Rosenberg. This is the third book in the "Guardians of the Flame" fantasy series, and forms the final third (actually the final 40%) of the Baen omnibus also called "The Guardians of the Flame", which I bought in 2003. Excellent fantasy; the series started out fairly average, but it got better in book 2 and even better in book 3. Highly recommended.
