It most certainly is.
And wouldn't it be wonderful if no one used their own personal choices to make judgements about who is, or isn't a "real" reader? And wouldn't it be even more wonderful if people didn't misuse the word "real" in ways that--intentional or not--can be construed as insulting or confrontational. ![]() Last edited by DiapDealer; 03-05-2018 at 02:57 PM. |

Sure. Just as soon as you admit that your use of the word "real" was problematic.
I have no problem with archaic, but otherwise properly used words. Why would I? Last edited by DiapDealer; 03-05-2018 at 03:06 PM. |

I do not stand why people are getting offended.
We have many ways to read a book: PC, Tablet, phone ... etc but an ereader is specifically a device with eink display and that is what it seems the original posted article is talking about. We will always have a a need for an eink ereader especially when so many people love to read outdoors. Only way I see it going away is if they made smartphones and tablets 100% glare free. When the weather is good I love going to a park and read and reading outside sucks on a phone or tablet. Even lighing turned up to max its still hard to see the screen. |

We are getting offended because some use phrases like "all 'real' readers use eink" (and not just in this thread).
Whether that's a universal "all" or an an anecdotal "all" where the user knows everyone in the "all" is irrelevant. It's the fact that avid readers are being divided into "real" and "other" categories based on totally subjective criteria. Same goes for using "serious reader" in a similar context. There's no need for it. |

Sorry, as I figured that as a anatomical description it was acceptable and not profane, at least in the original definition or meaning of profane. To me a profanity normally relates to religion such as taking the name of a God in vain. Next time I will use the term "derriere".

No, you need to give it a rest and admit your mistake. Not only did you use a No-True-Scotsman-Fallacy, but you are also trying to establish special snowflake status about readers at your workplace. You already full well know that your special workplace cannot be used to generalize. But here you go trying to establish superiority of eink based on your very limited experience.

The "real" adjective is often applied to others who agree in some way with the speaker. We have a hyper Christian guy working where I live who's always referring to what a real Christian does or thinks or believes. Right after Katrina hit New Orleans he told us that they got what they deserved for flouting God by building below sea level. Every real Christian, according to him, refuses to listen to music by Michael Jackson because we all know he broke God's law. He says the same thing about any homosexual. When I mentioned the biblical injunction about passing judgement on people he insists that it's not judgement, it's opinion.
My family moved from Connecticut to Texas in 1945 when I was 5 and all my life I was told I was not a real Texan. I never really cared that much but when I got older and found myself working with younger programmers I began reminding them that I got here before they did. Sure enough I became a real Texan. ![]() "Real" in this sense means something like "I'm a narrow minded SOB and if you disagree with me you're dead wrong and a fake!". During the inquisition that got a lot of people heated up. I think the way the term "real readers" was used first in this thread meant heavy readers and wasn't about burning anyone at the stake. Although the discussion after that heated up to the point where I'm surprised no-one caught fire. Ereaders are not dead. I personally own enough of them to disprove that notion, as I suspect do many of you. Reading on a phone is a perfectly good way to read if it's what you like to do. The same goes for tablets and even (shudder) paper books. The proper way to read a book is the way you decide to read it. Any real reader knows this. ![]() Barry |

I'm getting tired of the piling on. ZodWallop is not the first one to bring up the fact (even Amazon people mentioned it in an interview) that heavy readers usually use eInk eReaders. Maybe the problem was the word "real" -- but let it go, it's used in the same way as "heavy." It wasn't a personal attack. Grow thicker skins and get over yourselves. This self-righteous, martyr complex gets old. And I don't like "politically correct" groupthink.

Well, just to come to the party I have to advise that I am not a "real" reader and I confess that may account for the fact that I no longer qualify for and have discarded using eink readers.
But rather I am an unreal reader, like in "Hey bro, you're an unreal reader, the number of books you get through is just sooooo unreal compared to everyone else. And that tab you use for reading is just sooooo unreal too!" |
