It's a pipe dream for a good portion. Didnt say majority or everyone. You are lucky you have a long lived family. Not everyone has great genetics. Add in bad health habits ....dead by 60...lol.... Anyhow...total average life expectancy in Us is apparently 78 years.....that's the average. So I am assuming just under half will die before and the rest live at or beyond.... |

Only if you’re talking about a median value. Even then, results may skew depending on whether the age is rounded to years or not.

It is not a pipe dream to live. No one knows. Heck 150 years ago, you would have been considered an old man. For all I know 10 years from now, the average life expectancy might be 100. Here is the thing, 20 years from now, I will be 70. My oldest daughter will be 53. My grandson will be legal to drink. But you said in 20-30 years ebooks won't be usable. Is everyone in the world going to die in 30 years. Our age doesn't matter in your argument. Hey kiddo that has had internet since elementary school, technology will continue to evolve so no one can say what digital books will look like then. Rather like I am pretty sure my aunt was amazed at all the technology that came along in her lifetime. |

Well I didn't say they wouldn't be usable. But not guaranteed. All my comments where based on previous comments. Just trying to put it in perspective that it is not really worth it to be worrying if ones ebooks will be around in 20-30 years... |

Do I think the files as I know them right now will be around in 30 years? Maybe, maybe not. Do I think the contents of the files will be around in 30 years, probably. I am pretty sure I have 2 or 3 different formats of digital ebooks just from first bought to now. The thing is, it is much easier to change a digital format than to keep an analog copy in mint condition. I have a 105 year old book that looks way better than some done in the last few years. If Amazon doesn't crash and burn, I am pretty sure I will still have access to my ebooks. If not, I should have backed them up. Same idea with music or photos, do you think you will still have your digital photos to show your grandkids? |

Average can be many things (mean, mode, median, geometric average, etc), but most commonly when used without qualifier it is the mean. For life expectancy it's generally the mean, and the distribution is not normal so the mean and median are different.
It's definitely worth noting that life expectancy at birth differs from life expectancy for an adult, because there are a disproportionate number of childhood deaths; that's not as huge a factor as it was 100 years ago, but it still has an impact. US life expectancy at birth is about 78 years, but a 30 year old on average will live to 82 years and a 60 year old can expect to live to about 85. That's partially eliminating childhood diseases and partially that you've avoided getting whacked by a car or similar for 30 years already so you've eliminated low-end risk. |

Dude you just Googled it and quoted the definition. Hence the fact I didnt type it all out again and ended it with ..........
Next time I will put etc.etc... the median, which is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number Happy? |
