The NIV Quickview Bible is on sale for $4.99. The "Quickview" part is that this Bible has a bunch of USA Today-style infographics (about 400 of them) sprinkled through the Bible. Here's an example (I shrunk it slightly to comply with the MobileRead size guidelines):

The note at the bottom says that the authorship of the Book of Nehemiah "is uncertain", implying that the authorship of the other books is certain. You can take that as a guide to the theological bent of the rest of the infographics.

Thanks for the post. I got it about a year ago when it was marked down (I think that I got it, I need to check). I like what they've done. Nothing wrong with trying to make the Bible more interesting; maybe it will draw in people who otherwise wouldn't explore the Bible.

We can't get into a discussion about this on this thread, but I want to see what you think about something. If the writer, or whoever created the infographic, puts a note saying that the authorship of Nehemiah is uncertain, does that really imply that he/she thinks that the authorship of the others is certain? This kind of thing is of intense interest to me. Here is an illustration, one of several that I could give. Suppose the writer did his/her doctoral dissertation on Nehemiah and was very familiar with all of the authorship questions and the evidences pro and con about the possible authors. He/she is convinced from that that the authorship is uncertain, no matter what others may say. However, he/she hasn't done nearly that kind of personal study on any of the other books of the Bible, and just accepts what the professor(s) in his/her classes throughout his schooling has(have) said about them. Wouldn't it be possible for him/her to have put a note that the authorship of Nehemiah is uncertain, while making no comment about the certainty/uncertainty of the others? So, then, does he mean to imply anything about the certainty of the authorship of the others?

And, yes, the infographic does show the theological bent. It's very conservative. I'm not implying (ha) that I disagree with it, I'm just saying that that is the way that it is.

Yeah, I waffled when it was on sale before and ended up not getting. I regretted it and snatched it this time.

FREE Pdf Commentary on Proverbs, by a Published Author.

I know that the book of Proverbs is in the Jewish Scriptures, which is known as the Tanakh. However, it is also in part of the Bible that Christians use known as the Old Testament. So, the most appropriate thread available for this post seems to be the "Christian Interest" one.

An organization called Peacemakers (www.peacemakers.net) is offering a free commentary on Proverbs, Proverbs: Wisdom for Today.

The ebook is in pdf form.

I couldn't find any evidence that this book has been published commercially before. However; the author, William F. Luck, Sr., is also the published author of at least two other books. There are at least two other books located on the Peacemakers website that he has authored that I may post later after I have had a chance to give them at least the "once over" look.

I can't vouch at all for the quality of the commentary, having not even perused it yet. However, it is substantial, having 284 pages.

In case it makes any difference, I am not affiliated in any way with the organization which is providing this free ebook, nor do I necessarily endorse any doctrinal positions that they take nor works that they engage in.

Here's the direct link: http://peacemakers.net/RevWmLuck/Pro...Commentary.pdf

Former Agnostic Criticizes Secularism and Defends Christianity in this Bargain Ebook.

There were many more markdowns of religious books (that I ran across, at least) than usual today, because of B&H marking down a sizable batch of their's. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like I had the time tonight to post but one or two. This one "made the cut."

The author criticizes secularism and defends historic Christianity in this big 341-page book. Usually, with that topic being such a polarizing one, a book of this kind would struggle to get 4 stars; however, this one gets almost 5 stars (4.8)! I'm thinking that something has to be special about it.

One thing for sure that is special is the markdown--it's a big 89%, making the price of this Kindle ebook only $2.99.

Saving Leonardo: A Call to Resist the Secular Assault on Mind, Morals, and Meaning. By Nancy Pearcey. Rated 4.8 stars, from 76 reviews at the present time. Print list price $26.99; digital list price $26.99; Kindle price now $2.99. B&H Books, publisher. 341 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Saving-Leonard...J4E7122YN1SXVB.

Book Description
Is secularism a positive force in the modern world? Or does it lead to fragmentation and disintegration? In Saving Leonardo, best-selling award-winning author Nancy Pearcey (Total Truth, coauthor How Now Shall We Live?) makes a compelling case that secularism is destructive and dehumanizing.

Pearcey depicts the revolutionary thinkers and artists, the ideas and events, leading step by step to the unleashing of secular worldviews that undermine human dignity and liberty. She crafts a fresh approach that exposes the real-world impact of ideas in philosophy, science, art, literature, and film--voices that surround us in the classroom, in the movie theater, and in our living rooms.

A former agnostic, Pearcey offers a persuasive case for historic Christianity as a holistic and humane alternative. She equips readers to counter the life-denying worldviews that are radically restructuring society and pervading our daily lives. Whether you are a devoted Christian, determined secularist, or don't know quite where you stand, reading
Saving Leonardo will unsettle established views and topple ideological idols. Includes more than 100 art reproductions and illustrations that bring the book's themes to life.

Book Description
Did the universe start with a big bang? Does distant starlight prove the universe is old? What are black holes and how do they form? Can we see stars forming? Are ETs and UFOs real? Secular astronomers teach that the universe began to form more than 12 billion years ago by chance, through what has become known as the “big bang.” However, there is strong evidence that points to a young age for the universe, and provides a biblical view of astronomy. This succinct pocket guide is a unique and handy illustrated book that provides excellent summary answers to the big questions of the origin of life.

This History of the Civil War Argues that Evangelical Christians Caused It. $1.99.

I'm posting this in the "Christian Interest" thread, instead of the "Non-Fiction" thread because of the premise of this book. In this work of revisionist history, the author asserts that the Civil War was caused by evangelicals (Christians). That's right, they are the ones who caused the American Civil War, regardless of what you may have heard or believed before. That is if I understand correctly what I've read in the book description and the editorial reviews on the book's Amazon webpage.

I don't think much of revisionist histories or historians, generally speaking. But, this book is published by a major publisher (Bloomsbury Press), the author is a professor of history at the university level (a regional university), and he has written several books on history, including some on the Civil War. And I'm open-minded. I'm buying the book, and will read what the author has to say. Perhaps I will find out that he's right. We'll see.

The book is marked down to $1.99 right now. That's not a huge percentage drop because the regular digital price ($3.99) is so unusually low.

I would like to mention that the Audible narration for the book is only $3.99, as a Whispersync companion deal. With the ebook being a hefty 641 pages, the narration turns out to be almost 28 hours long--that's a lot of listening for $3.99!

My posting of this book does not necessarily indicate my agreement or endorsement of anything in it.

America Aflame: How the Civil War Created a Nation. By David Goldfield. Rated 4.4 stars, from 53 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $20.00; digital list price $3.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Bloomsbury Press, publisher. 641 pages. http://www.amazon.com/America-Aflame...7KRNCB3SRY391K.

Book Description
In this spellbinding new history, David Goldfield offers the first
major new interpretation of the Civil War era since James M. McPherson's

Battle Cry of Freedom. Where past scholars have limned the war
as a triumph of freedom, Goldfield sees it as America's greatest
failure: the result of a breakdown caused by the infusion of evangelical
religion into the public sphere. As the Second GreatAwakening surged
through America, political questions became matters of good and evil to
be fought to the death.

The price of that failure was horrific,
but the carnage accomplished what statesmen could not: It made the
United States one nation and eliminated slavery as a divisive force in
the Union. The victorious North became synonymous with America as a land
of innovation and industrialization, whose teeming cities offered
squalor and opportunity in equal measure. Religion was supplanted by
science and a gospel of progress, and the South was left behind.

Goldfield's panoramic narrative, sweeping from the 1840s to the end of
Reconstruction, is studded with memorable details and luminaries such as
HarrietBeecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman. There are
lesser known yet equally compelling characters, too, including Carl
Schurz-a German immigrant, warhero, and postwar reformer-and Alexander
Stephens, the urbane and intellectual vice president of the Confederacy.

America Aflame is a vivid portrait of the "fiery trial"that transformed the country we live in.
