Did you use 10.0.3? What version Calibre did you use?

Also, it'd make more sense for them to monitor the DeDRM repo instead (all commits) and they'd see pretty easily when there's new Amazon-related code.

I'm a little surprised when I hear comments about companies not visiting enthusiast sites. I would hope there is at least one enthusiast employee in a product's development team.

For Kindles it may have been true 10-15 years ago. Now all they think is how to sell you more books by showing you more ads, not how to make their products more user-friendly. Not that other companies are vastly better these days either (Kobo devs used to regularly participate here; it's been a looong while since we last heard from them).

User opinions and reality conflict with manglement, beancounters and crayon dept. Few large companies let developers conceptualise or top level design, but want implementations of the marketing vision at appropriate cost. Most actual developers of any product aren't allowed to engage on SM or forums. The companies will have marketing/support people for that.

In ereader market you also have start-up or Chinese gadget companies where the design/spec team obviously don't read many books or understand the concept of library view using meta-data but focus on features (Such as reMarkable, Boyue/Meebook etc). The big names are focused on retailing ebooks, which is why Sony, with a great PRS series, exited the ereader market because they were bookselling focused and their bookstore was a failure.
The color Mirasol ereader was for two Chinese bookstores.
Amazon sold ebooks before they had a Kindle.
Barnes & Noble and Kobo have bookstores.
Tolino, bought by Kobo was about the bookstore.
Apple, Google, Amazon, B&N, Kobo provide free apps and want to sell ebooks.
Binatone wanted to partner with a bookstore with some of their LCD ereaders.
We are lucky there are any eink ereaders.

Right. I'll give those a try.

Worst case, I think, is if I can't get the book on my reader, I'll return it to Amz and hope for a refund; at least they'll get their book back.

Considering how some Kobo staff who identified themselves as such were treated by some MobileRead members, I don't blame them for being in monitor only mode.

I tried this to get a non-DRM version of a book I bought from Amazon published in May 2023, which I was only able to download directly per USB to my (Paperwhite) Kindke. I could not download it to an older (1.7) version of Kindle for PC. And I have learned here that the newer versions of K for PC will download newly published books but they retain the DRM and also keep it when transferred to Calibre. I tried uploading from my Kindle to Calibre, but that did not strip the DRM and the book will not open in Calibre. This seems to be the "state of the art" but if I am missing something please refer me to the appropriate thread or post (thanks!).

Correct time? Latest firmware version for the Touch? It may be trying to verify your account with a code. Someone here should be able to walk you through that.

As for the other issue, don't use the book downloaded directly to your Paperwhite. Get it from the website. If you need more help on that, ask at noDRM's GitHub.

I have correct time and latest firmware, serial no., Amazon password and phone no. (which they ask for) but they do not send the code per email to register. In the meantime I see that Kindle Touch (4th gen.) is no longer supported for store use (since Aug. 2022), so I guess that settles it.

You should still be able to register it so you can download books you've bought via the website or other devices.
