Hey there! I'm new around here, so sorry if this question seems a bit naive, but could you point me in the right direction for asking questions about bypassing DRM? Additionally, I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know where I can find those links you mentioned for detailed help with DRM. Thanks a bunch!

Check on Github. DeDRM has more information, still active discussions, but no longer maintained. The new fork is NoDRM, also on Github. DeDRM works fine, but you might need NoDRM, especially for other than Amazon things. I personally have not installed NoDRM, because DeDRM does everything I need.

Slight clarification. NoDRM took over from Apprentice Harper as the maintainer of the tools on GitHub. The project is called DeDRM_tools in both cases.

(The tools were originally compiled by Apprentice Alf who published them using a blog prior to GitHub.)

Not trying to pick a fight, but are you sure? Yes, in the spirit NoDRM took over, but technically it took over by creating a fork. Apprentice Harper could come out of retirement and release a new version of his tools and it would require a merge to have the same codebase again. Or am I misunderstanding Github's repository?

Yes that could happen. But forking is the only way to take control that I know of.

There was recently some fun drama with an open-source game modding tool where the project lead (who didn't actually contribute all that much) booted out all the other developers to, uh, fight against left-wing queer ideology or something. (This is a Minecraft launcher, so I'm not even sure how that would work.

) The other developers just forked it and pretty much everyone switched over to the fork, lol.

Yes, NoDRM created a fork. But afterward Apprentice Harper acknowledged that fork as being the definitive version of the tools going forward.

bought not borrowed
publieshed before 2023
downloaded as azw using kindle for PC 1.17

so i meet all of those, I am on a newly setup windows 11 Pc.
installed K for PC 1.17 and blocked updates.
restored calibre from a baclup in win 10 - works ok
reinstalled the tools , just to be extra sure

what condition am i missing / how to troubleshoot this please

if there's a brick wall in the way I prefer not to keep headbutting it, so if there is bad news please tell

i have mislaid by physical kindle reader again, and anyway its currently registered to the wrong account, so I can't yet look at download for USb transfer options. with hindsight, I shoudl have bought the book using the account that its registered to, but too late now.

update. this seems to be a calibre setup issue in my new Win 11 install
i tried other kindle books i own, that i had previously converted , freshy downloaded into Kindle for PC 1.17 app, and they are failing with "locked by DRM" error at calibre conversion.

the kindleunpack tool also now fails on my previous print replica azw4 purchases when freshly downloaded into v1.17.
i have the calibre library in C: root directory - could that be an issue
all my calibre app data was restored from backup and seems fine, but to be sure
i have removed and reinstalled the relevent tools, and reread the help that says no customisation needed..
also, I can still reimport my epubs from ade . that part of the toolkit is fine.
I guess I have to take this elsewhere As I know that detailed setup help is not allowed.

SOLVED. was a knlde ofr PC install problem.
i had too quickly or too zealously blocked updates[ i used an ancient .bat file from somewhere here), so although the kindle app seemed to be working - i could open and read my books in it, it had not properly saved my registration data, . so I am thinking it had not saved some necessary key in registry, for other apps to find.

this time I manually managed the block auto update. and now everything is working
