Getting rid of that would be a deal breaker for me. Except for the fact that I wouldn't touch a Kindle anyway.

Without USB you'd probably end up leaving your WiFi on and giving Amazon unfettered access to your device.
No, Kindle's don't use MTP, they work like a flash drive when you plug it in. Download and transfer is an alternative way to put books on a Kindle from Amazon. You download a file with the correct DRM key for your Kindle from Amazon's website and then copy it on. It is an alternative to 3G/Wifi syncing.

FWIW, from another thread:

Oh, that's UMS (USB Mass Storage). That was always a bad idea.
It's like giving your car keys to an unreliable friend.
It's better to ask "Where are you going? I'll drive you."

CNN just did a article on the Colorsoft

Amazon wants you to buy content from them and use WiFi to load onto your Kindle. So I cannot see them adding in a format that is only for side loading.

That depends where the buttons are. On my Kobo Libra 2, the buttons are on the side and can easily be ignored. But if the buttons were in the center, they could not be ignored so easily.

On my Sony Reader PRS-T1, the buttons were under the screen which is again easily ignored.

So if you do have buttons, put them someplace they can be ignored.

The KINDLE Scribe does use MTP.

It's a separate, but related, issue. The "Download and transfer via USB" is how to get DRM'd Kindle Store content from Amazon and manually put it on a Kindle. The Scribe already uses MTP for USB now, and the option is still available on Amazon to download DRM'd content. So, it's not an MTP issue at all. It's Amazon removing the option to move DRM'd files manually, not about copying data with USB overall.

Amazon has never blocked loading your own content over USB. This recent issue is about loading DRM'd Kindle Store content over USB, which also has often been the most reliable way to get files that can be stripped of DRM.

Are Amazon purchased ebooks accessible through MTP (for those Kindles that are now using MTP)?

It could still be an MTP issue. The Scribe didn't have MTP from day 1 so it was added to the list of Kindle allowed to D&T. Given the new Kindles have MTP from day 1, it could be that they are not added to the list and D&T won't ever work with them.

Device: Kindle Paperwhite 5 16GB, Kindle Paperwhite 6, Kobo Clara,
Does all this mean that I can't "download and transfer via USB" AZW3 from Amazon to use with the 7-inch Paperwhite as I do currently for the 6.8-inch? I do this and use Calibre for storage/organisation/editing, plus de-drm. Is this still possible for the 7-inch Paperwhite or not?

Update: So, having dug around a bit, it seems none of the 2024 devices actually have the "download and transfer via USB" option on the "Content" page on the "Devices and Content" section. But if you have Kindles before the new generation that option is still available, so if you're thinking of upgrading, KEEP YOUR OLD KINDLE, as I will be with my 6.8-inch PW. Also, on a Mac, like I have, you'll need a programme like OpenMTP to sideload fonts, as for some reason the Mac file explorer doesn't recognise the 2024 Paperwhite. Hope this helps.

Seems it's no longer possible with new Kindles.
