I seem to remember from safety training a few decades back that permanent damage to the retina can occur in 100 seconds or less which is considerably less than the 5 minutes or 300 seconds you were suggesting.

And a mirror is pretty much the same as direct.

Much less than 100s can leave you with permanent damage, even during an eclipse. Symptoms may take half a day to develop. There is no treatment. You might eventually recover or not notice the damage eventually if it's slight.

I am confident that people smart enough to be here don't need to be told it's a bad thing to stare into the sun.

The point - is that sunlight from a mirror will still fry your eyes - even though it's reflected. Ergo....reflecting light doesn't impart some magical property vs "light shining directly into your eyes".

If you are seeing light, it's coming directly into your eyes.

So...people on here don't need to be told "turn the light on your device down to a comfortable level" because they are all too smart to need to be told such things.

And yet -- I'm supposed to be concerned that they DO need to be told not to stare into the sun?

For your first point, I lack your confidence. I've seen too many smart people do very dumb things over the years to be able to believe that very intelligent people will show the common sense of a watermelon.

As for your second point, take a look at the news around the time of a solar eclipse and notice the number of people who do not heed the warnings about damage to their eyes. We do not need someone who read your post and vaguely remembers it saying that it is okay to stare into the sun for 5 minutes.

Ghod alone knows that the equally mindless twaddle coming from the anti-vaxxers seems to find a home in what passes for some people's minds.

Well ok then. So let's stop getting up in arms whenever someone reminds folks that a lot more comfort can be found reading on a device if you:
- adjust the brightness
- switch to a dark color background (not necessarily black)
- switch to a lower contrast text color (usually not white)
- find a comfortable reading position

Even if - eInk is your preferred. Even if - some folks can't ever read on an LCD comfortably.

And -- don't look into the sun or via a mirror

Since my preference for comfortable reading is black text on white background, I would not agree with your middle two points. The first and fourth are fine. Again though, those are my personal preferences. One of my great nieces thinks reading with her back on the ground and her feet up on the sofa is a comfortable reading position while to me it looks like an invitation to check out a chiropractor.

For me comfortable means light background (not necessarily pure white) and black text. And even then LCD is not comfortable for me. Dark background with lighter text has never been comfortable either. And yes, I've tried various combinations.

People, their eyes and their preferences are just different.

There's wisdom in this. Pure black and white contrast can be irritating. Dark gray and near white gray is more suitable.

Which pretty much describes e-ink. (At least when the front light is not on.) Come to that, for a long time strong blacks were the holy grail for LCDs, but they're not doing too bad these days.

Of course some actual evidence behind these wonderfully strong assertions about what is supposedly best for everyone would be a good starting point.

I never argue with personal preference. I argue with stupid proclamations about "light shining directly into your eye"

Oh..almost forgot. While people were tripping over my (should have been obvious) hyperbole about staring into the sun...

Nobody seemed to pick up the lit match in a dark room example. I could add "watching a fire in the fireplace". Direct light into your eyes. Nobody complains about it. One of the joys of life is gathering around a fire with friends and family.

Something must be in play with so many who can't seem to find a way to read on an LCD screen comfortably. It is demonstrably NOT "because the light is shining directly into your eyes".

Cuz....I'm pretty sure 98% of the folks who can't read on an LCD screen watch tv or go to the movies...where they stare at a screen beaming light directly into their eyes for hours.

Aren't they still using projectors at movie theaters? Isn't that reflected light, or is this more hyperbole?

Nope...just me making a mistake. Ok, no movies. But you watch tv, right? Sit by a fire? Look into a burning log in a fireplace?

Use a computer for hours?
