I used to read plenty of books on my phone but that's AMOLED... I've tried 'reading' PDFs on my computer screens and it's always a hassle, I can't do it as unlimited as I could with Kindle or phone. Printed out versions are best for me, but if I had no other choice, I would do it on the PC... but with breaks.

I'm very much the same. I've started reading The New Yorker short stories, and always find myself feeling like the words are not registering like they would if I was reading on page or an e-ink device. Admittedly one of the stories was Nettle by Joy Williams, so maybe that is why it went completely over my head.

As a new Kindle Paperwhite owner - it's lightness has FAR more to do with my appreciation of it. It has nothing over my iPad mini -- nothing at all -- in terms of comfort in reading. To me. Where I read. Now, were I do be a "sit outside in the sunlight" reader, I would feel differently. But the iPad mini has a FAR better screen, much higher resolution, and is far more configurable in terms of color/contrast options. But, now I have both. I use whichever strikes my fancy at the moment. I do wish I'd have had an eInk reader when my kids played soccer. I did read on my iPhone in the bright sunlight, but it would have been nicer to have had my kindle back then. |

And WHO is reading with a white background in low light? High contrast light is uncomfortable. Here's a test. Look at the sun. For you...look at it a good 5 minutes. Ok. That's direct light. Now, take a mirror, and look at the sun from the mirror. For you...do this for 10 minutes. Once your eye sight returns...understand that "reflected light is somehow magical" is complete rubbish. Next...go to a completely dark room. Light a small match. Stare at the match. Doesn't hurt your eyes, even though the light is directly into your eyes. You still might prefer eInk...but it's not due to the "magic of bouncing light" |

No. Never mind the screen, the damn things are too heavy.

I won't go into the sheer stupidity of suggesting that someone look directly at the sun for any length of time without proper eye protection. |

So if reflected light is better for reading them reflecting multiple times is even better???????
This reminds me of the math question. If 1 man can construct a building in 100 days then 100 men can do it in 1 day. ![]() Apache |

But now that you mention it, the diffuser in a front lit Eink display does reflect the light multiple times before it hits the screen. |

There's a book or paper called The Mythical Man Month about how managers think that they can speed up a project's completion by hiring more worker bees.

In my experience adding folk either slows it, reduces quality or kills the project. Communication and management difficulties rise exponentially.
You can have more people on a Giant Project than a small one, if you have a good architect and great managers. Both are rare. |
