Bargain @ $1.99 from Simon & Schuster's Atria imprint in multiple stores (not couponable, linkage goes to Kobo but no doubt price-matched at your favourite Canada/US venue):

The Disappeared by Swedish author Kristina Ohlsson (SYKM), 3rd in her Fredrika Berman series of Stockholm-set crime thrillers, which fulfills my Nordic noir-buying impulse for today.

A young woman on her way to a party vanishes without a trace. Two years later, with all hope lost, her body turns up. Mercilessly dismembered, it has deteriorated considerably in its lonely burial spot on the edge of a forest. The forensic team is able to identify the body as that of Rebecca Tolle, a student at the nearby university.

Investigative analyst Fredrika Bergman and her team are assigned to solve the case and question those who may be responsible for Rebecca’s brutal death. Soon, more bodies are found, in the same area. But the killer is still at large.

Fredrika discovers that when Rebecca died, she was researching a person with a dark past- one that Rebecca seems to have uncovered. Fredrika is deeply invested in the already heart-wrenching case, but when her lover’s name comes up as a possible suspect, it might be too much for her to bear.

Did Rebcecca get too close to evil- prompting evil to react?

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Annie and the Grateful Dead by Denise Dietz (SYKM), a humorous-looking mystery short from a cat's point of view, which the author says was nominated for an Anthony Award.

Grateful Dead, a “pop culture” cat (he watches TV a lot), helps foil a cat-show robbery and, in the process, solves a cold-case murder.

Bargain @ $1.99 for today only (Nov 3rd) according to the newsletter from Open Road Media.

Death of a Dissident by the late Stuart M. Kaminsky (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in his Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov police procedural mystery series set in Soviet-era Moscow, this volume originally out in 1981. Two of the novels in the series were finalists for the Edgar Award's Best Paperback, and a third book won the 1989 Edgar for Best Mystery, according to SYKM.

Currently at the sale price in likely all the standard Canada/US stores, linkage provided to Kobo, where it's couponable, and Amazon, where it'll stay on sale until a little after midnight Pacific Time if you're interested.

On the eve of a show trial, a Soviet dissident is stabbed through the heart

On a frigid night in silent Moscow, Aleksander Granovsky paces the floor of his government flat. He has dedicated his life to exposing the brutality of the Russian penal system, and in two days he will be tried for the crime of smuggling essays to the West. Granovsky is drafting a speech to deliver in court when an assassin appears and pierces his heart with the point of a rusty sickle.

The case falls in the lap of Porfiry Rostnikov, a Moscow police inspector whose three decades on the force have made him an expert in navigating the labyrinths of the Soviet bureaucracy. But it will take every ounce of Rostnikov’s skill to find the killer and survive the investigation, as every question he asks takes him closer to the heart of the KGB.

Free today on Amazon UK -A Real Shot in the Arm by Annette Roome

'Chris Martin — housewife and mother-of-two — seizes the chance to re-gain her independence by putting her endless housework to one side and fulfilling her adolescent dream of becoming a journalist - much to the dismay of disapproving husband, Keith.
Shortly after taking up a Junior Reporter role at the local newspaper the Tipping Herald, Chris is given an assignment to cover a conference at a local hotel.
But when the hotel becomes a crime scene Chris begins to uncover a very different story to what she had had in mind.
The corpse that was discovered hanging from a fire escape doesn't look to her like a suicide - heroin addicts don't OD and then string themselves up.
But who would have been driven to murder within this tight-knit community?
The further Chris gets into the investigation, the more questions arise and the more personal sacrifices she is willing to make.
But is it love of the job or love of a colleague that is keeping Chris away from her husband?
And will she be strong enough to face the truth when it reveals itself?'

Free today on Amazon UK -The Retreat by Anne Morgellyn

'Detective Inspector Mackie Divine has been hardened by decades in the Metropolitan Police Force.
After years of loyal service, she faces suspension and is approached by an agent of the Special Intelligence Services for a surveillance operation.
The case takes her to an isolated château in Brittany, France.
She will be a guest of The Retreat, a community of social misfits, led by Peter Roman, a charismatic philosopher and therapist.
Her task is to gain the trust of Roman and his group, and to investigate Babel – a group of extreme right-wing influential figures hell bent on organising terrorist attacks and causing civil unrest – who regularly gather at The Retreat.
Mackie fails to take their presence seriously...until a series of arson and racially provoked attacks take place in the neighbouring town.
Soon riots begin across Europe: Berlin, Milan and Marseilles are in flames.
With tensions escalating and time running out, Mackie is ordered to keep her head down and eyes up.
She must not underestimate the danger of the Babel group.
Can she get to the heart of the matter and save her career?
Or will she become a victim of the dangerous group controlling The Retreat? '

Free today on Amazon UK - Too Many Cooks: The Bartlett and Boase Mysteries by Marina Pascoe

'Who would imagine a little gold ring could lead to kidnap, torture and even murder? How could the curse of the Pharaohs come to Falmouth?

The year is 1923. When a young Cockney woman appears in Falmouth, Inspector George Bartlett and Constable Archibald Boase think she’s harmless enough – until she and they are caught up in a seemingly endless cycle of mayhem and deceit. Unsure exactly how this woman fits into their enquiries, at various turns they are investigating her, searching for her, and worrying about her safety – and still can’t decide if she is all she seems.

With death on their doorstep, a strange visitor to the town who claims to be a relative of the tragically-murdered Russian royal family, and a killer still on the loose, Bartlett and Boase have little time left to prevent further murders as their superintendent looms large in the background waiting to take them off the case …'

The Ten Commandments, which is part of the DCI Webb mystery series by Anthea Fraser, is a repeat US Kindle countdown deal from back in August. It's again $0.99 instead of $3.99 for about the next 5 days. It's about 4 am US Pacific time on November 6 right now.

Quote:
The body of an unknown man is found in a pub car park on a warm summer’s evening.

He has been brutally bludgeoned to death, and there are no witnesses.

When DCI Webb is called to the case, he has a nasty sense that he’s been here before.

Six years previously, Trevor Philpott’s body was found in identical circumstances.

But the case was never closed, and the killer is still at large.

As Webb delves back into the details of the previous case he uncovers more unsolved mysteries.

Are the cases connected?

Has the same killer been responsible for more murders over the years?

DCI Webb must return to the past, if he has any hope of stopping more killings in the future…

The Ten Commandments’ is a gripping crime novel featuring Anthea Fraser's popular detective David Webb.

Praise for Anthea Fraser:

“A superbly crafted, riveting, page-turner of a read" - Booklist

“Ms Fraser is her dependable elegant, guileful self withholding the killer's identity till a dying fall" - Sunday Times

'A well-mannered, well-plotted and well-told story' - Birmingham Post

'Sympathetic, well-executed book, in which full attention is paid to human feelings and failings' - Yorkshire Post

ANTHEA FRASER has written all her life but did not begin to take it seriously until after marriage, when she found herself at home with two small daughters and embarked on a correspondence course with the London School of Journalism. She wrote short stories before turning to novels of the supernatural, and then to crime. Her other books include ‘The Seven Stars’ and ‘One is One and All Alone’.

Quote:
After fog forces her to spend the night in a country guesthouse called The Seven Stars, Helen Campbell reads her horoscope in the local paper.

Little does she realise that by doing so she will dramatically change not only her own life, but the lives of everyone else living in the village.

Ten days later, she returns to stay at The Seven Stars while attending a local course on antiques. Slow she finds herself increasingly involved in the lives of the people living there.

As she arrived a girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident.

But was it an accident? Or was it murder?

A spate of robberies have targeted local country houses. Are they connected to the girl’s death?

And what is the significance of the phrase which recurs in the horoscope column under ‘Tomorrow’s Birthday’?

Whether or not it was written in the stars, Helen's stay at the guesthouse ensures that life will never be the same again... for any of them.

Twenty-three years ago, Helen Jones disappeared on her way to school.

She was twelve years old and no trace of her or how she died was ever found.

But now a confession in a sealed envelope has been discovered in the possession of a dead man.

And strangely this discovery has come to light now that another young girl has gone missing.

With the police keeping unnervingly quiet as to the identity of the confessor and focusing on the new missing person case, Naomi struggles to understand what happened to her friend all those years ago…
