It's likely a related reason that Mercury in The Metal Men was colored red despite real mercury being silver-colored. Two other members of the team (Platinum and Tin) are colored silverish and coloring Mercury red makes him stand out from the rest of the team.

I don't know why musicians destroy their instruments at times. Through the years, I've had a violin, guitars and keyboards (this was before I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) and I never treated any of my instruments that way. *shaking head*

I can imagine why the 'proof' of his invention of the hard hat doesn't exist. The nazi's probably would have destroyed any such proof that a man of Jewish heritage could do any such thing.
