the only remotely decent grits I had were cheddar cheese and green chili smothered

Back to the topic at hand, Venting and Ranting.

During morning rush hour here they open the "shoulder" lane (freeway breakdown lane) to to traffic in order to help mitigate the traffic problem. With the recent heavy rain we have had, a huge pothole has developed in the shoulder lane about a half mile from the entrance I normally take to work. I knew it was there, but being somewhat caffeine deficient that time of the morning I usually forget about it.

Well this morning it ATE my right front tire. Since the breakdown lane is open to traffic, if I stopped I’d back up traffic all the way to Kapolei, so I drove on the flat tire until I could move out of traffic and stop. Then I couldn’t open my door without having it taken off by passing cars, or get out on the passenger side because of a barrier about six inches from the door.

I sat there and thought for a minute, and decided that the tire was ruined anyway, so I went ahead and drove on the flat to the next exit, got off and pulled into a church parking lot to change the tire. While I was in the parking lot, trying to figure out where the spare, jack, lug wrench etc. were, the church caretaker came out and asked me if I had a flat. At that point I was afraid he was going to tell me to get out of his parking lot.

NOT SO!!! He turned out to be the nicest guy, and helped me change the tire, so I could get on to work. I was only a half hour late, and I got to meet a truly good person; and I don’t even know his name. Meeting him made the whole thing almost worth it, and he wouldn’t even let me pay him. I wish I could heap a bunch of karma on him, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t hang out here.

Perhaps I can contact the priest, and let him know how grateful I am.

Sorry about the tire but that was really nice of the guy to give you a hand. All too often people just drive on by when they see others having trouble.

My husband and I regularly pull over and change a tire for the elderly (there a lot of elderly people in our neighbourhood) or help push a car off the road. Even giving a battery boost. I always keep at least 2 sets of cables in my truck just in case.

I'm glad it all worked out

Yes, thanks.

While I might be considered elderly in some circles, this guy was at least as old as me. He said he was retired, and helps out at the church on a volunteer basis.

I sent an email to the parish priest expressing my thanks.

Sorry about your tire but glad to see that you found a silver lining. I think it is great that you emailed the Church. the gentleman who helped you is deserving of praise.

I saw a guy holding a railway spike next to the wheel nuts of his Mini Minor's flat tire as I drove by. My brain clicked on and I realized this fellow was stuck with no tools. I went back. To see his face change from dispare to hope was reward enough for helping. He had borrowed the car and it had no jack or wrench. I got the tire off and his spare was flat. I was carrying a tire pump at the time and got him up and running. He had borrowed the car while visiting from overseas and had just driven to his fathers house to pick up half a dozen bottles of expensive red wine. He left with five. A yummy reward.

I does feel good to be able to lend a helping hand. I keep 2-3 cans of "Flat-Fix" in the trunk of the car, and have given them away several times. Faster and cleaner than changing a tire, and as long as the blowout isn't too severe, work very, very well! In fact, I drove most of one winter back in New England on a flat I fixed with canned stuff. I was too broke that Christmas season to buy a new tire!

That fix-a-flat stuff is good for emergencies, but it should only be used if a spare isn't available, and the tire should be replaced at the first opportunity. It's also good to keep in mind that a lot of garages and repair shops won't touch a tire that's been inflated with the stuff. And then there are certain off-label uses that aren't recommended at all.

Yes, that's what it says on the label. My concession to safety was, the following day to let out the propellent in the tire and refill with clean air from the pump. The tire itself remained well inflated for the rest of the winter at which point I sold the clunker and got back on my bike. When I lived in New England I would buy an old beater in November and sell it in April. No need to buy Michelin tires for it... Retreads from the junk yard were fine.

I did, but I figured that he/she just wasn't properly trained in the use of Flat-fix. It's not very good (obviously) for hips, but it's the cat's meow for breast augmentation! It guarantees another 2,000 miles!

<puzzlement> So yesterday we go for a treadlie ride. Whilst waiting at the traffic lights to cross the main road, me and bloke on bikes and a man and son walking(you can see the crossing area was crowded so I was off to the side on the road). A car driving on the main road threw an egg at me! . WTF! it went all over my leg. The man said they were filming it too.

Why would anyone want to do that? Obviouslyu too well fed to be able to waste food like that. And yes it was fresh. I could only image how horrible it would be if it wasn't. </puzzlement> not really a rant.

You say they were filming... Do you suppose they were looking for specific reactions? You talked with them; did they offer to help clean? Did block wish to feed them their cameras?

I couldn't find any recent egg throwers on youtube. So I guess the video is just doing the rounds between friends. It's pretty amazing how stupid people incriminate themselves on youtube.

That reminds me.

I was sitting on a step outside the fish and chip shop at Bronte Beach one day when a bunch of kids in a Datsun 1200 threw an egg and hit my friend in the chest. It didn't break and hurt like hell. The smile was wiped from there face when my six foot six mate and his (built like a brick outhouse) mate jumped into their Datson 240Z with the air filter sticking out the bonnet, fire flames painted all over and an exhaust that sound like a rocket and gave chase. Those guys nearly died crossing Bondi Road against the lights before my mates gave up.

I guess you were lucky (sort of) that the egg broke.
