It's not whole corn kernels that are used. Imagine if you bit off and saved the little pointy end and threw away the rest. Then you boiled those little pointy bits until they had the texture of quicksand... Then boiled just a bit longer because you can... NOW you have grits... Left on the plate without washing, and they have to be removed by sand-blasting. HCL has no effect, nor does wire-brushing.

(You can understand why I'm 'Persona Non Grata' in four Southern States...)

Grits are gross. The only way to make them not gross is to take 10 years off your life and make them insanely bad for you by adding tons of butter and other stuff that tastes good but will kill you.

Grits is like eating tofu straight from the package.

HOWEVER, the Shrimp and Grits and my brother in law's Cheese grits are to die for.

Dressed up right, it's fine. On its own? Wonderful torture device. They could have used it in WWII to get the entire landing plan for Normandy.

While I've never had your BinL's Cheese Grits, I will (grudgingly) agree that if Grits are dressed up right they can be eaten... once in a while. (NOW can I enter Tennessee again without fear of prosecution?)

But wait a second... You get tofu from a package? Not from the tofu store? No wonder you don't like the stuff! Tofu has to be fresh! After 2-3 days in a package Tofu tastes as bad as grits! But then, that's were I came in...

Y'all just don't know what's good. The wife and I had grits for breakfast today and loved it. And I drive a Toyota Corolla, not a pickup. My wife's pickup is a GMC. Her Ford F-10 doesn't count, 'cause that one isn't running, and it's just a coincidence that pretty much everyone in her family, including her sister, is named "Billy".

There's no such thing as good grits, grits are grits; and taste like whatever you put on them. Put butter on, they taste like butter, put over easy eggs on them and they taste like egg yolks, put nothing on them and that’s just what they taste line; nothing!

Now poi, that has its own taste, kind of like wallpaper paste.
