I had the same problem with book stores. I used to leave my wallet with a friend before allowing myself to go in & browse!
Now of course there's "one-click" purchasing on Amazon - I'm doomed.

Thanks for the link - very fascinating

HAHAHA that's a good thing its a bit of a drive for me otherwise I'd be tempted! CPS would be on my doorstep so fast.

There is quite a bit of a "fabric store row" here as well:

Books have always seemed less of an indulgence than fabric, plus even pre-ebook days they are easier to store and carry home! Even with the yeti with me I find it hard to buy just enough fabric to make an item - and he often encourages me! So I end up with several metres of skirt, trouser, waistcoat etc material. And I'm never organised enough to have a decent bag with me, so I have to use the shop's carrier bags, which dig in and break.

However I can fit quite a lot of books in my normal bag (currently a 30l rucksack), and heft them around without really noticing

The other thing with bookshops is that I've always worked within a few minutes walk of one, so I can spread the browsing and buying out. It probably does mean I've ended up spending more on books over the years than if it had been a bit harder to get them, but I'm not complaining

If you all don't want me learning Quebecois because you don't want me knowing when you talk about me behind my back, that's fine. I just wanted to learn something new. You all like thinking of me as the ignorant American savage. Thought it would be nice to greet people in their native language.

That's why I stopped going to the major bookstore chains. Halfpriced books was my wallet's bestfriend.

Québécois is a special language rooted in culture. The French hardly understand a thing were saying. Quite like Ozzies and Americans. You need a history class combined to a language class to master. Why do you want to learn it anyway? We don't use it to talk behind someone's back, we use it between us because it's quicker and because we don't need to translate our thoughts and correct typos.

I restrict myself mainly to used book stores just because I'm usually outraged by prices, and even there, I developped the "I'm gonna get the best deal" syndrom and try different places before I buy anything... unless I'm shopping for school, then I can go crazy - *if* I have a card with me.

It was an answer to Dennis who dared to write merde (sh*t) - if you want to greet us, go with "Salut", there's more chances to get a positive response!

Can you blame me for getting paranoid and angry?
Look what I had to go through to learn "Salut"!

I am starting to feel like I hate people.

Long drives tend to do that to me.

I don't hate people.
They just make it hard to like them sometimes.

I mean, really!
Ask a Canadian an innocent question and they act like you're trying to steal State secrets, like where they hide the Holy Beaver or the hockey pucks.
