I tried the corean firmware too, but still did not graps what the News section was for.

What's preventing me from using it is that it does not support accented characters at all.*Meaning that each time a book would use a é / à /*ç /*… / etc. nothing would be displayed at all (ie.*« Télévision » would become « Tlvision »).*It's quite impossible to read french books then.

I guess this is aimed at you Miles, but is the CFW as far as us end users can go with the E60 atm? Because I have tried to keep up with goings on over at xooit and hardware.fr, but those guys might as well be talking some other language (apart from French or English) because they are talking about installing binaries ( I know these are programs/apps) onto the reader and all sorts, but I can't make head or tail of it.

I've managed to get into the root of the reader btw using Telnet, but I can't do anything with it, is that just for the professionals or is there more we can do?

I would appreciate it if you could explain any more development we can look forward to regarding this secretive reader?

Sorry for the essay and thanks for the CFW, top job.

Regards

Well, most of the firmware is actually contained in a closed-source binary blob (MainApp).*It's quite hard and close to impossible to work on it, and Samsung won't help - it contains all the DRM-related stuff and that's not something everyone should be able to edit.

So basically there's a basic distro running on it and supporting stuff such as displaying PNG, managing Wifi, or listening to music.*Everything else is inside this single MainApp blob, meaning there's no way to edit the interface, the music front-end, the fonts used in the eBooks section, or the Library management (ie.*ability to create subfolders). Even the display itself and the touch screen are totally handled by this MainApp.

I can't really do much more than what actually made it into Foxfirmware.*I'm not a developer, my knowledge of programming languages is pretty limited as well as my ability to create alternatives to what Samsung published.

Telnet will allow you to remotely connect to the E60 and run your own scripts in the Linux environment, using Bash.*It's then up to you.*You can browse around the filesystem, copy files, edit them providing they are not in the read-only fs, or even run stuff such as "mplayer [url]" to listen to online music if your device's wifi is enabled.

The guys over at hardware.fr (and http://code.google.com/p/e60-open/ ) are trying to completely remove MainApp and rebuild a whole custom system. This will take time, but allow for far greater customization.*Right now, the hard part is creating a driver to handle the e-ink screen correctly. But afterwards, maybe we could get something like OpenInkpot running on the device.

Final way of getting everthing functioning apart from dictonary.
Sync E60 and Backup all books using Calibre.
Format thru computer main and Micro SD memory 32bit/2048. So they are now clean. Copy or create Firmware_Update Dir on main memory then put your Firmware you want to use in Directory. (Example E60FR-CP.bin)
Unplug from computer depower and repower while holding up volume as well (As shown in early forum postings) let it come up with firmware loaded and take battery out and repower. Then go into E60 menu with pen:-
1) Settings/Support/Reset/Delete All Data.(Will reset to Korean or French)
2) Then do Reset to Default Settings.
3) All Language set to your language. (French English etc.)
4) Set Start up mode to Home. From default of Last Mode. (This stops unit locking up when Dictonary is gone into. You can just hold power down when lockup. It will not keep cycling in lockup mode.
5) Then sync with Calibra and reload Books onto E60. This gets a clean install and all covers showing without opening each book.
The newspaper section on Korean Firmware seems to be for newspapers and it deletes them when next days newspaper loaded.
I have tried to put calibra newspaper in Scrap file but no joy yet.

Hi folks, I just got my hands on a used E65 (basically an E60 with a keyboard) copied some pdfs on the memory card (no DRM, they're university lectures) but they don't show up in the Books menu, also copied some pdf books with calibre (again, no DRM) and they don't show up either, does anyone have a clue?

Italian version

Hi,
thanks a lot for all your work to develop a custom firmware better than the original.
I have a E-60 with 1003 italian Firmware, I tried to install your custom firmware because I'm interesting to web navigation but when I choose firmware directory the device tell me that not exist a new firmware to load.
Why?
I have to change file name? Or I have to change sign?

Thank you and excuse my poor english...I'm italian...

Bye

I found renaming firmware to SNE-60.bin and putting in firmware update folder. Then depowering and repower holding up volume and it will load new firmware. (Read earler forum pages)
Also loading onto micro SD card is a a black art. Sometimes the reader syncs sometimes it does not. I found you need to load books directly into books folder not into sub folder example:-

Right way:-

Micro SD Card/Books/EBOOK.

Wrong way:-
Micro SD Card/Books/News/EBOOK.

I found it will sync better.

Have phoned Samsung UK and got through OK. They are going to put UK firmware on Web page so it can be reloaded. We will see.

Paid 99E in France -- how to get 50E back?

I just bought the E60 in Carrefour (France) for 99E. How do I get it for 49E?
Was it just something Samsung came up with in January here in France?
Any hints appreciated, as I just found this out by reading this thread...

E65 Korean magic number

Hi,

I've got the Korean version of the E65 Samsung's eReader.

I would like to install an updated firmware with support for stress characters (for the spanish language).

I've already downloaded it from opensource.samsung.com, but when trying to install it on the device it says "No File found"

I think it's a thing of the magic number to be written at the beginning of the file.

Does anybody know the correct magic number for the SNE-E65.bin of the korean version? I've seen above the one for the SNE-E60.bin but it might not be the same

you have this, in france somone have formated an E60 to reinstall the systeme. It is quite risky.

- branche un E60 sain sur le PC en mode USB et attends qu'il soit monté ;

Restauration :
- débranche le bon E60 et branche ton E60 ;
- mount (il vaut mieux revérifier. . .)
- sudo dd if=home.bin of=/dev/sdb

-sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=home.bin

Edit :
