One can read a LOT and NOT collect.

Absolutely contrary to the "Device" view idea! Fix this, and they'd fix the issue for most people.

Second problem is of course those having multiple Kindles on an account, perhaps with multiple users or multiple uses. If those Kindles have had their own categories, suddenly all those are pushed onto every PW2 5.4.2 on that account - again irrespective of whether or not there are any on-device books or use for that category on that particular Kindle.

As for the notion that people don't have time to read until retirement, I think that's frankly preposterous. I can see why not some wouldn't have the time, there are many living situations in the world, but for most it is just a question of priority. People have different priorities. Some read, others don't. Some read A LOT.

And if you read a lot on your Kindle and use categories, your life just got a little bit harder after this PW2 update - I can see that plain as day, even though it doesn't affect me because I don't really use categories but simply have those books on my Kindle that I'm reading now without any categories.
You can read 1,000 books per year and just throw out the old ones. I have NEVER ever re-read any book but the Bible.

Collectors of eBooks are a unique breed and the vast majority of readers are NOT Collectors.

However, I have been collecting music on wire recorders since 1930, tape after 1960 and mp3 after 1990. I have thousands of songs collected in at least 5 languages. Most folks don't do that either.

By the way, all the eBooks I read range from 600 to 1,000 pages and usually cost about $ 10. Someone, who collected those types of eBooks, would have spent $ 60,000 to collect those eBooks. That is a lot of money for a HOBBY.

I really doubt that Amazon will ever cater to eBook Collectors. Collectors would have a better chance trying to deal with Calibre to expand their software to meet their needs.

I checked on this already--so far, no. Otherwise I would have gladly shared the firmware from my as yet untainted PW2. Amazon is taking lessons from Apple, it seems. (And yes, I jailbreak all my iThings.)

Hmm.
I would think those available right now are shipping with the old software, but for how long?

This could be an option but Amazon may yet roll out this update to PW1 as well. It would be a shame to have to run with wifi off as it's so convenient for buying books.

As I said before, Amazon does NOT cater to the eBook COLLECTOR who primarily uses Calibre and Apprentice Alf. Frankly, I doubt if more than 2% of Amazon sales are to people who use those products.

Plus, I rarely ever look at eBooks I've read in the past. I have never collected books or eBooks. I just discard them when done. Amazon keeps them for me so I leave them there but it is really not a necessity for me.

Again, I have a hunch most Amazon purchasers are like me. They are NOT eBook Collectors. They just buy a book to read and then discard.

If you want improvements in eBook collection software, contact Calibre for improvements and use Microsoft Windows 8.1 tablets with Office 2013.
You are of course correct that most Amazon customers aren't as heavy readers as some people here. Amazon - and its founder/CEO Jeff Bezos - have, though, aligned the Kindle as a reading enthusiasts device and features like the Collections are clearly designed to be used by those with more than just throw-away books.

These people are not asking for anything more than the return of a feature that Kindle used to have two days ago. For whatever reason, PW2 now shows Cloud books in "Device" mode, if those books are inside a collection. That alone looks like a bug, it makes no sense why it would do that.

I notice that on my PW 2013 but they are displayed greyed out AFTER the downloaded eBooks.

I don't see that as a bug. It lets the user know what other eBooks are in their Collection which can then be downloaded if the user wishes.

It certainly does NOT bother me.

Just need to be *very quick* when registering the unit so that the update doesn't have time to fully download before wifi is safely back to off. It is feasible, as I had managed it with my PW1 earlier this year (found a partial download in the root directory which I deleted), though I guess even if the full update downloads, it won't be a problem as long as it's deleted before the PW has a chance to install it. Might be a good idea to find somewhere with a slooooow connection to register!

Simaru, every time I read a post of yours I have an insane urge to scream. I have re-read hundreds of books again and again. Ohh and I've never even read the bible or any 'classic'.

And I don't 'throw' books away.

That's why we have Cloud mode.

Why doesn't it show all the cloud books in "Device" mode then, even those not in categories. Why show only collection cloud books greyed out, why not go all the way and show all the non-categorized "throw-away" books there too? Why not get rid of the "Device" mode altogether and just have "Cloud" mode... You see the problem?

I don't want to see the throw-away books the "Device" mode and neither do most average people, I'm wagering. Why should people who put them in categories see non-device books in their "Device" mode.

There is no excuse for "Device" mode showing greyed out Cloud-only books. For goodness' sake, it is supposed to be "Device" mode. Again, that's why we have the "Cloud" mode. Cloud-only content should only show in Cloud mode, not in Device mode.

I need to go away and read, or watch tv. Comments by one particular poster are beginning to make my blood boil. Not to mention what it's doing to my blood pressure.

Tonight Kobo and Barnes and Noble must be laughing at Amazon. It reminds me of the iTunes 11 fiasco.

Read the Bible. Its the greatest story ever told, will give you the wisdom of the ancients and will comfort you as you get old. Its also sold more copies than any other book in history.

I've read the Bible in several languages and many versions and must have read it from beginning to end at least 20 times.

I own at least 75 paper bibles in 5 languages and dozens of eBook bibles and app bibles.

See this link about bibles:

If it's possible to access the Kindle's file system even before registering the device (I haven't tried), I would put so much data on it that there's not enough space to download the full update.

Maybe I'm just not seeing it, but did they forget to include an option to update your current position in a book on goodreads? Can you only mark a book as read once you've finished it? Because that seems to defeat the whole point of having goodreads integration in my book.

Are you saying there is no Status Updates with the integration? Why even bother then!
