At first glance, appears to be safe. Haven't looked deeper than that, since I don't have the device.

Do you smart and resourceful people have a copy of the previous firmware handy? This update is complete crap. I would love to be able to go back, if possible.

Well, darn. The PW2 is a worthless piece of plastic, now. If I could be assured of getting a PW1 with a good screen, I would go back to that. But too risky. If the PW2 was my only ereader, I would really be hopping mad. As it is, forget using collections, now.

You can still buy brand new, PW(gen1) devices in some countries.
If it's screen is bad, just get it exchanged.

Is the firmware signed to be device specific (linked to serial number, etc.?) Or can 5.4.0 be pulled from a PW2 that has not yet been updated?

You could, with a bit of effort, dump it in a reasonably useful manner from a jailbroken device, but you couldn't install it on a vanilla device, you'd need a jailbroken device for that (diags access or a patched kernel).

TL;DR: No.

Ok, it's worthless to people who use have/used collections and have large archives.

I de-registered mine and then registered it to an account that has never had a device on it, and doesn't have that many books in the archives. So it's not AS bad now. But still, the irritating pop up windows every time I try to add a side loaded book to a collection.

Also tested out goodreads, and it's pretty much like the android app. Don't need it. (Of course, that was the real reason I upgraded, to see goodreads...darn it).

I hate the update. YMMV.

NO

Different processor, different SoC, different graphics co-processor, shall I go on?

Name on outside of device is the same, that is about it for firmware compatibility.
