Just got my Tuff-Luv-Multi-View-Leather cover, and damn it's a great cover/case. Over overall quality/feel is topnotch, quite a bit better than Amazon's, I think. To highlight some of its qualities:

+ Great protection
This is true from all sides even when the cover is flipped back as it's also acts as a case.

+ High quality material and design
Really nice looking leather with a comfortable feel to it. This 'should' also be genuine leather. The other aspects of the product, as far as I can tell, is likewise of high quality.

+ Features (muti-view)
This is a feature that I didn't think I would need, but it's just such a awesome option to have. E.g, when I lie down I can just put in on my belly and relax without having to hold it.

You can also flip the front cover backward 180 degrees where you can lock it into place.

+ Cheap ~ 25 pound
The cheapest Amazon cover is around 30 pound, I think, and this cover have a lot more
meat on it, in my opinion.

Thanks for the input! I have a question, do you mean I dont need a screen protector for my Kindle or just that this one in particular is useless? I dont know, I have yet to take mine out of the plastic because Im afraid Ill mess up the screen and I was just about to buy a pack of screen protectors.

Though I'm sure there are exceptions, the majority opinion would seem to be that screen covers are not needed and may be a hindrance.

As the Kindle is not a touch screen device, it's not like the screen surface gets a lot of wear while in use, and when not in use, you'll keep it in a case or cover.

Plus even the best screen protector will reduce clarity or contrast a little bit.

Plus for many people (well, all the people in my household, any way) it is IMPOSSIBLE to affix a screen protector without getting dust, fingerprints or bubbles under it. Maddening!

Unfortunately the Javoedge cover is a disappointment. It seems to be a tad too small. I can force the Kindle into the cover but it's like trying to button my jeans after the holidays Plus the weave of the fabric is so raised, I'm worried it's going to snag on other things in my purse. Javoedge's customer service was less than helpful, so I'll probably just bite the bullet and keep the cover until I find something I really love. But I can't recommend Javoedge for Kindle 3 covers.

I've always enjoyed the moleskin / book-like cover for Kindles, so I went with Portenzo and it came in a couple days ago. It's a bit expensive (but I figure that my all my books will quickly exceed the cover cost, so I splurged), and the kindle fits snug with all the buttons and ports easily accessible. It pretty much met all my expectations and then some.

Kaptn, that looks interesting. How is the Kindle actually secured in there?

I meant that the screen protector is very bad. It leaves bubbles and glares a lot. There's not really much of a point to a screen protector anyways.

Wow, that's a lot more reasonable than the one at Pad & Quill, which I found too overpriced (even the shipping is expensive) to justify.

I am working on a DIY light hack using the powered apertures on the left side of the kindle 3. I don't have access to an authentic kindle cover that has the nifty hooks for reference, however. Could someone post a high resolution, head-on picture of each of the clips with a mm scale included? From that, I can back hack the shape of the clips in sheet steel or something similar.
I found the image below and managed to use that to create a working lower clip, but the angle of the photo and quality of the image are preventing me from making a properly shaped upper clip.

Here's an example of what I need to work from. Note that the plane of the lens is parallel to the plane of the object. That is to say, nothing is slanty. Also note that the ruler with a mm scale is clearly visible and close to the object. Using an image like that, I can work out a template that I can use to craft a clip from.

If you are interested in making your own light hack this information might be useful to you:
  • Available Voltage: ~4V
  • Top port is positive
  • Lower port has two fingers that must both be raised

This schematic uses 3mm white LEDs for an almost blindingly bright light and draws around .2mA. Substitute 500-1000 ohm resistors all around to provide a more subtle light that only draws around 0.01mA.

If you have any brilliant ideas to move this project along, I'd love to hear them. Most of all, I need a photo or a rendering of the clips so I can sculpt my own.

For help designing LED arrays check out this fantastic page: http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

Each corner has rubberized tracks that go into the wood, and that gives it a pretty nice fit for the Kindle. It's pretty secure too. While I haven't done anything too crazy with it, when shaking it a little and holding it upside down it doesn't budge at all.

I hope you didn't waste your money. when I got my first kindle I had every intention of being a good kindle parent and bought everything you could think of for it to include the screen protector. I am notorious about leaving covers on cell phone screens, new microwaves etc. a protector on a kindle is about as useless as tits on a boar hog. don't bother

Thanks for the feedback on the screen protectors everyone! Ill leave the screen protectors alone. Im thinking Im going to go and get this...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A3K6FSH5FRTEDS
.. for the time being. Money is tight and, even though it may be somewhat heavy, I cant afford an Oberon plus Im going to be doing a lot of travel. I think when I can finally pick up an Oberon Ill just use that for around the house. The way they look itll probably be so pretty Ill never want to take the Kindle out of it.

This is just an idea and subject to change. Im still looking for cheap cases. I want to get the lighted cover, its the same price as an Oberon but I like designs. I guess Ill cross that bridge when I get to it.

Before I had my cover, I just used one of those yellow shipping envelopes as a sleeve. The bubble wrap provides some pretty good protection! You could consider doing that and saving up for a more fancy Kindle cover, though you will get some odd looks...

I know that they have a good rep, but the simple truth is the only times I have used a light with my kindle was on a night time bus ride in Mexico, and when the power is out

Thats not a bad idea but sadly we dont have any of those lying around and its quite aways to the nearest Post Office. You know I considered just using the box the Kindle came in but I dont think thatll work very well.

Really? You dont want to read when the lights are out? It seems every single night when I shut the lights out I get the urge to read a book but its too dark. And since theres only one light here that happens to be relatively bright its either all the light or no light at all. I figure a Kindle light should remedy that problem but Im also aware that often things dont work out the way I had hoped. It wouldnt surprise me if I end up with a glare issue or buying the wrong cover and the light wont work right, for instance. I remember I never used my light for my regular books too, it might be a case like that. Guess Id rather have it lying around just in case. And Im hoping this map case that I mentioned has some space to put it in but Im sure it doesnt.
